The Last Warrior. Andrew Marshall and the Shaping of Modern American Defense Strategy by Andrew Krepinevich and Barry Watts
Requirements: .MP3 reader, 306mb
Overview: Andrew Marshall is a Pentagon legend. For more than four decades he has served as Director of the Office of Net Assessment, the Pentagon's internal think tank, under 12 defense secretaries and eight administrations. Yet Marshall has been on the cutting edge of strategic thinking even longer than that. At the Rand Corporation during its golden age in the 1950s and early 1960s, Marshall helped formulate bedrock concepts of US nuclear strategy that endure to this day; later, at the Pentagon, he pioneered the development of "net assessment" - a new analytic framework for understanding the long-term military competition between the United States and the Soviet Union. Following the Cold War, Marshall successfully used net assessment to anticipate emerging disruptive shifts in military affairs, including the revolution in precision warfare and the rise of China as a major strategic rival of the United States.

In The Last Warrior, Andrew Krepinevich and Barry Watts - both former members of Marshall's staff - trace Marshall's intellectual development from his upbringing in Detroit during the Great Depression to his decades in Washington as an influential behind-the-scenes advisor on American defense strategy. The result is a unique insider's perspective on the changes in US strategy from the dawn of the Cold War to the present day.

Covering some of the most pivotal episodes of the last half century and peopled with some of the era's most influential figures, The Last Warrior tells Marshall's story for the first time, in the process providing an unparalleled history of the evolution of the American defense establishment.

Manual of Reformed Stoicism by Piotr Stankiewicz (Series in Philosophy)
Requirements: .ePUB reader, 2 mb
Overview: This book is a manifesto of reformed Stoicism. It proposes a system of life which is bullet-proof, universal, viable and effective in every cosmic setting. It holds in every possible universe, under any government and within any economic system. We can be reformed Stoics no matter what we believe in.

Reformed Stoicism is about enjoying and exercising our agency. In other words, it’s about the flow of making autonomous and right decisions, and about celebrating our ability to make them.

With no reliance on nature, with the recalibration of metaphysical positions, with skepticism towards grand discourses and universal answers, with an emphasis on the usefulness instead of truthfulness of narratives, with no reference to the vanity argument, with criticism of both conservative and ascetic misinterpretations of Stoicism, with an overall softer and more empathic approach, we can no longer be defined by the generic term “Stoicism”. Our time, in short, calls for a fresh interpretation of Stoicism. It is time for a new generation of Stoics. Thus: reformed Stoicism.

Faith and Evolution: Grace-Filled Naturalism by Roger Haight
Requirements: .ePUB reader, 9 mb
Overview: The dialogue between Christian faith and science, in particular with evolution, should not be defensive but positive and constructive. This essay takes the notion of evolution from science and gives it a theological context, one that recognizes how deeply anthropomorphism has confused our spiritual and religious options. That theological context avoids those misrepresentations that appear to be scientific but are also anthropomorphic, and to clarify the meaning of Christian faith in a way that speaks to our scientifically influenced critical culture. Its intention aims at enriching Christian life for those who internalize the questions that a secular scientific culture legitimately raises. More and more these questions press in on all of us. They are good questions, and they stimulate a deeper faith. If our world is evolutionary, we have to incorporate its reality in our faith vision.
