The Murder of Mr. Ma by John Shen Yen Nee, SJ Rozan / Narrated by Daniel York Loh
Requirements: .MP3 player, 231 mb
Overview: London, 1924. When shy academic Lao She meets larger-than-life Judge Dee Ren Jie, his quiet life abruptly turns from books and lectures to daring chases and narrow escapes.
Dee has come to London to investigate the murder of a man he’d known during World War I when serving with the Chinese Labour Corps. No sooner has Dee interviewed the grieving widow than another dead body turns up. Then another. All stabbed to death with a butterfly sword. Will Dee and Lao be able to connect the threads of the murders—or are they next in line as victims?
Blending traditional gong’an crime fiction with the most iconic aspects of the Sherlock Holmes canon, Dee and Lao’s first adventure is as thrilling and visual as an action film, as imaginative and transportive as a timeless classic.

The Power of Mathematical Visualization by James S. Tanton
Requirements: .MP3 reader, 687.5 MB
Overview: Many people believe they simply aren’t good at math—that their brains aren’t wired to think mathematically. But just as there are multiple paths to mastering the arts and humanities, there are also alternate approaches to understanding mathematics. One of the most effective methods by far is visualization. If a picture speaks a thousand words, then in mathematics a picture can spawn a thousand ideas.
The Power of Mathematical Visualization teaches you these vital problem-solving skills in a math course unlike any you’ve ever taken. Taught by award-winning Professor James S. Tanton of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), these 24 half-hour lectures cover topics in arithmetic, algebra, geometry, number theory, probability, statistics, topology, and other fields—all united by fascinating connections that you literally see in graphics and projects designed by Professor Tanton. In demand worldwide for his teacher and student workshops, Dr. Tanton is MAA’s Mathematician-at-Large—a globe-trotting advocate for teaching math “with beauty and joy and wonder and humanness,” as he was recently quoted in The New Yorker magazine.

The Strange Recollections of Martha Klemm by Julian Hawthorne (.ePUB)
Posted by: Zbignieww at Yesterday, 7:15 pm in General Fiction/Classics
The Strange Recollections of Martha Klemm by Julian Hawthorne
Requirements: .ePUB, .MOBI/.AZW reader, 2.9 MB
Overview: Julian Hawthorne was the son of Nathaniel Hawthorne. He wrote poetry, novels, non-fiction, a series of crime novels based on the memoirs of New York's Inspector Byrnes, and edited several collections of short stories. He attended Harvard, without graduating, and later studied civil engineering.
In 1898, Julian submitted an eyewitness account of the destruction of the United States battleship, Maine off of the island of Cuba for William Randolph Hearst's New York Journal (although it has been proven that Julian was in the United States at the time of the explosion). Hawthorne's eyewitness testimony of foul play and aggression by Spain was taken as fact and helped steer the United States towards war.
In 1908 Hawthorne was invited by a college friend to join him in Canada selling shares in silver mines that did not exist. They were tried, convicted of mail fraud and served one year in prison.

The Maiden Voyage by Joel Arvidsson, Narrated by Maanuv Thiara
Requirements: .MP3 reader, 9 hours and 58 minutes, 64 kbps, 271 mb
Overview: Its 2089. The climate collapse is a fact. The situation on Earth is acute, and Sweden is one of the last stable countries in the world. No one dares to hope that the country will last long.
The young journalist Sameer Peshwara blames the climate catastrophe on the rich, so when American billionaire Jessica Stein wants to hire him to write a book about her space project, he cannot believe it. Why does she want one of her most avid critics to write a book about her plan: to build a spaceship for the purpose of colonizing another planet?
Sameer detests Stein Systems, but is tempted to abandon his principles and take the job that can save him and his family. At the same time, he knows that he should aim higher than that. Is it too late to try to save humanity? And does humanity even deserve to be saved?

Hit and Run by John Freeman (.M4A)
Posted by: VielBiern at Yesterday, 7:01 pm in Audiobooks
Hit and Run by John Freeman / Narrated by Peter Berkrot
Requirements: .M4A player, 63 mb
Overview: A prolific and celebrated poet, critic, editor, and teacher, John Freeman is one of the most recognized and versatile forces behind today’s literary scene. His Everand Original, Hit and Run, represents a departure for him as a writer. A work of autobiographical fiction, it inhabits that space between lived experience and the imagination’s riff on that experience.
It begins when the narrator — a newly married young man named John — witnesses an accident at the ragged end of a night out with friends. A hit-and-run in downtown Sacramento, California: “Bang! A body pinwheeling in the air,” Freeman writes. “Then something which felt like silence but surely wasn’t. Not at three a.m. at that intersection. When the reality reel rethreaded into the projector there was a man splayed out on the center median, a crowd of revelers laughing and teetering….”
The victim does not survive, and that fact — as surreal as it is undeniably real, as horrifying as it is commonplace in its testament to human fragility — becomes a destabilizing crack in John’s world. His sense of safety, home, and his own assumptions about himself are shaken, setting off a series of shock waves in his life that test his marriage, sanity, and what sort of justice is possible for the dead man or for any of us.
As the police try to find the driver responsible and enlist John’s help in the investigation, Hit and Run becomes a page-turning whodunit while taking on age-old and acutely topical human mysteries: how we make sense of the unimaginable and brutally unexpected, and how we manage to heal and find connection even as we’re hunted and haunted by loss and chaos. Perhaps the most personal and revealing work Freeman has ever written, it is also a story of romantic love lost and then — against all odds — found. Above all, it’s an urgent and audacious consideration of what it means to bear witness. Freeman does not shy from that responsibility, whatever the costs and frights, and word by word moves from the self-estrangement common in those made to cope with traumatic events to a kind of homecoming, with all the stakes and intimacy of personal essay and the poetics and possibility of the best literary fiction.

Fighting for Love: A P&P Variation by David Russel (.ePUB)

Fighting for Love: A Pride and Prejudice Variation by David Russel
Requirements: .ePUB reader, 176 KB
Overview: “Fighting for Love” is a regency Pride and Prejudice novella of approximately 20 K words, a quick, light and romantic read, recommended for those who love Elizabeth and Darcy’s immortal story.
After the disastrous proposal in Kent, Elizabeth travels to London for a short stay before returning home. She is reunited with her sister Jane, who is still in the Gardiners’ home.
As both sisters are in low spirits, Mrs. Gardiner attempts to cheer them and arranges for them to attend several parties, balls and plays.
These occasions lead Elizabeth and Darcy to be caught in some awkward encounters, both filled with regret for their past behaviour.
Furthermore, the beautiful Jane Bennet appears to have gained the interest of a wealthy earl, who has begun courting her. She is still very much in love with Mr. Bingley – who, however, has not appeared again.
Darcy has more knowledge about the earl’s true character and does not consider him a suitable match for the kind Miss Bennet. Feeling guilty for his intervention that separated Jane and Bingley, and willing to show Elizabeth that he has taken her reproaches to heart, he intervenes to remedy a situation caused by his arrogant presumptions.
When Bingley returns in town, Darcy reveals the whole truth to him. Unlike in canon, Bingley’s reaction is very strong, against Darcy, against his sisters, even against the earl who seems unworthy of Jane.
Fighting for his love, Bingley is badly injured, in danger of losing his life.
Darcy intervenes again, protecting his friend, helping him to heal in body and spirit and to reunite with the woman he loves.
Amidst these endeavours, Darcy and Elizabeth finally put their pride and prejudice aside, and unite their efforts in a fight for love and happiness.

Text and Math Into LaTeX, 6th Edition by George Grätzer
Requirements: .PDF reader, 33.0 MB
Overview: For more than 30 years, this comprehensive manual has been the standard introduction and complete reference for writing articles and books containing mathematical formulas. This sixth edition uses a slightly changed title, Text and Math into LaTeX, to emphasize the importance of text in mathematical/scientific composition. Sections that contained commands no longer much needed (such as includeonly) and the introductory sections to PDF (now ubiquitous) have been omitted. Many sections are now enhanced with discussion of new and useful packages. An occasional encouragement for the reader to consult ChatGPT for confirmation on various points illustrates the positive relationship between ChatGPT and LaTeX. LaTeX is widely used in many fields, including mathematics, Computer Science, engineering, physics, chemistry, economics, and linguistics. (ChatGPT lists 45 fields). Part I provides a quick introduction to LATEX, from typing examples of text and math to typing your first article such as on that shown on page 4 and similarly: creating your first presentation, such as the sample presentation, in a very short time. The rest of the book provides a detailed exposition of LATEX. LATEX has a huge collection of rules and commands. While the basics in Part I should serve you well in all your writing, most articles and presentations will also require to look up some special topics.
