Overview: Nothing could suit 13 year old Skeeter better than a summer job at the Okay Corral. The owner of the corral, Maxine Bates, will be busy taking care of the horses and guiding riding parties of tourists on the trail. Skeeter’s job will be to take care of Maxine’s nine-year-old son Shane. Just to be near the horses is a dream come true for Skeeter, and she and sunny-tempered Shane enjoy both the horses and each other. The summer changes dramatically when Burge Franklin, a businessman newly arrived in town, shows an interest in Shane, meets Maxine, and begins to pay close attention to her and to Shane. At first Shane is pleased to go places with Burge and proudly wears the off-white cowboy hat Burge buys for him. But perceptive Skeeter soon notices an ominous change in Shane, and in the end only her sensitivity and courage rescue him from devastating harm. Once again Lynn Hall writes movingly of the intricacy of human relationships.
