Don Juan: His Own Version by Peter Handke, translated by Krishna Winston
Requirements: EPUB or MOBI reader, 522 kB
Overview: Handke’s title in German translates as “Don Juan (Told by Himself).” This better title suggests that Don Juan is his own narration, that he exists purely by virtue of telling himself into being. The idea that Handke pursued for years and to which this book is dedicated, is that of finding another time: "Time for Don Juan was a problem, the problem". Time, here, consists of counted, quantified and capitalised time as opposed to a time of "telling," filled with life, which recalls the "long duration" of Henri Bergson and the "philosophy of life" of Georg Simmel. The recovery of this 'natural' time is invoked in phrases that suggest an older concept of time and place, such as 'a stone's throw away', and 'a half day's ride'.
