A Singular Captain by John Regan
Requirements: EPUB Reader, 297 kB.
Overview: The armada de moluccas sails from seville in autumn, 1519 with antonio pigafetta an Italian noble, the main chronicler of this most famous voyage.

Ferdinand Magellan, a portuguese, is plagued by mutinous spanish captains, one of them the bastard son and another a nephew of the corrupt bishop fonseca, who is the powerful head of the casa de contrataciòn or board of trade. within the first month magellan foils a mutinous plot, sacks one of his captains and personally executes an officer found guilty of sodomising a ship’s boy.

Magellan’s secret is that he was himself sodomised by a priest in his youth.
mutiny festers again a few months later in south america. magellan executes one of his captains and imposes hard labour on other mutineers. The son of Bishop Fonseca and a priest are left marooned when the fleet sails from that place.despite doubts and opposition by his captains, he discovers the strait that now bears his name, but the voyage across the pacific ocean is the most terrible in history, with many crew members dying of starvation and scurvy.

Arriving in what is now the philippines, magellan is overtaken by religious fervour and sets out to baptise the entire population of the island of cebu. Unwittingly, he is being manipulated by local chieftains and is killed in what is essentially a local war. Without his strong leadership, the armada descends into anarchy and becomes little more than a pirate fleet, preying on native vessels. reduced by shipwreck and desertion, they find the spice isles and embroil themselves in more local politics but manage to load a cargo of cloves more valuable, weight for weight, than gold.

Of the original 270 men in five ships, only 18 men in one ship, the victoria, return to Spain after a harrowing voyage of three years. pigafetta’s mission then is to defend magellan’s reputation against lies spread by other crew members seeking to conceal their own involvement in the mutiny in south america. he gains an audience with the king, don carlos, and presents him not with silver or gold but with a book written by his own hand so that, as he says in his diary, ‘the fame of so noble a captain shall not perish in our time'.

Tyrant, hero, fanatic, or perhaps all three, Ferdinand Magellan is a towering figure in world history, and its greatest sailor. a singular captain with an iron will, he overcame the hatred of his former king, put down mutinies, weathered storms, discovered the strait that bears his name and survived the dreaded scurvy only to fall victim to the fatal flaw in his character: religious hubris.
