A Collection of Science Fiction Books by Sam Moskowitz et al. (see contents for details of all contributors)
Requirements: ePUB/MOBI reader, 10.9 MB (main) and 1.1M (supplement)
Overview: Sam Moskowitz (1920–1997) was an early fan and organizer of interest in science fiction and, later, a writer, critic, and historian of the field. This meant he had access to the breadth of the output of fantastic fiction, the key players and documentation. This means that he is almost uniquely placed to provide useful context and background in the many anthologies he compiled, as well as the books and essays he wrote about the period. As one of the earliest people in this field, his work is a unique picture of the early days of science fiction, important foundations for the modern students of the period, as well as those just interested in reading some of the best stories from the time.

Under the Moons of Mars: A History and Anthology of "the Scientific Romance" in the Munsey Magazines, 1912-1920:
The publication of Under the Moons of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs in THE ALL-STORY MAGAZINE in 1912 brought onto the magazine scene a writer whose instantaneous and phenomenal popularity shaped the policies of the early pulp magazines, making them the focal center of science fiction and inspiring a school of writers who made the scientific romance he wrote the most accepted form for more than twenty years. This book tells the history of the early years of that colorful writing cycle and puts it into perspective of the publishing world of the period. It also includes a selection from each of the most acclaimed who wrote in the tradition of Edgar Rice Burroughs.
The history is chronological, with appropriate flashbacks, and written to be read for entertainment as well as information. Yet it is in every sense a reference, for careful attention has been paid to precise accuracy of titles, dates, rates of payment, biographical matter, and factuality. The bulk of the information provided was obtained from primary sources and has not appeared elsewhere.
This volume is a continuation of the editor's Science Fiction by Gaslight: A History and Anthology of Science Fiction in the Popular Magazines, 1891-1911.

Horrors Unknown: Newly Discovered Masterpieces by Great Names in Fantastic Terror:
The title of this book—Horrors Unknown—has a double meaning. It is, first, a collection of fine stories whose plots or approach to horror is so different, so unusual, so off-beat, as to present the reader with an element of novelty in the reading of the macabre which will almost seem to broaden the scope of the genre. Secondly, it offers an unparalleled assembly of previously unanthologized, and in many cases literally undiscovered, masterpieces of fantastic terror by authors so famous it seems almost incredible that so many works could have been overlooked.
Collection of horror stories, with preface and story introductions by the editor.

It was split into three separate paperback anthologies published by MacFadden-Bartell; Doorway Into Time (1966), The Vortex Blasters (1968) and Microcosmic God (1968); the paperback editions omitted Moskowitz's introduction and the story by Robert Bloch.
The book collects twenty-one tales by various authors, together with a historical and critical introduction by the editor. NESFA Press characterizes it as "an excellent historical introduction to the field, including some of the best stories of the 1940s and 1950s."
