Overview: So what if he was the love of her life in high school?

Cassie should have known better than to go to an air show of all places to confront Gunnar and try to get out of their new partnership. Just because he was her very own romantic love story when they were younger didn’t mean he still had dibs on that after eight years of no contact whatsoever, did it? After all, it wasn’t her fault she couldn’t find the words to tell him that the touch of his lips and the way he made her feel scared her so much that she had to pull away. He should have known she had no choice but to protect herself so she could function and build a life without him when he left her to go to college. Of course, choosing another boy over him to make her point may have been a really bad idea at the time, but she had paid dearly for that mistake as well and she wasn’t prepared to spend the rest of her life apologizing for it. She could tell by the look on his face the day he shut her out of his life that he was serious, but now that she was standing right in front of him, would he really turn her away again?

Wesley was supposed to be her friend. Sure they hadn’t really kept in touch after they graduated, but he knew things about her that should have made a difference. Like the fact that she had just lost her husband to the one thing she hated most, aerial stunt flying, and the tiny detail that she was too busy raising a five year old girl by herself to be able to cope with having to start over. She should have been able to handle it, but instead she was drowning and was failing miserably at the idea of moving on. So why would he buy into the commuter airline business she and her husband had built from the ground up, and force her to honor a contract her husband had signed without her knowledge or consent?

She wanted to start a new business offering romantic fantasy flights and she didn’t want to have to ask anyone’s permission, especially Gunnar’s. Maybe nine months should have been enough time to slowly start to recover from the sight of her husband’s plane crashing to the ground, but it was proving harder to ignore the scars that she was still left with. The overwhelming fear that just wouldn’t go away. But one look at Gunnar and she knew she had come full circle. No matter how irritating he could be, the fact of the matter was when she took one look at the man he’d become, she knew she doomed because even after all this time she was still in love. Romance? Yes please. Romance with sex on the side? Even better, but he was refusing to change his ways and all she had to do was see him sitting in his Pitts Special TS stunt plane, and she knew that the type of danger he seemed to live for made impossible for them to have a real future together.

She should have tried harder to fight it when her lawyer first contacted her. She should have been smart enough to walk away and never look back, but she just couldn’t. She had always regretted letting Gunnar down in the worst possible way when they were younger and was hoping that maybe they could finally have an adult romantic relationship if he would just commit and trust her again. He was looking better than any man had a right to and between the romantic nights and the history they had shared she was beginning to feel so much more than she was prepared to admit. Could they really ever just pick up where they left off, or would he always hold what happened in their past against her? In some ways he was still one of the few people who made her feel safe and protected, but could she really accept him for the daredevil flyer he’d grown up to be, or would the fears she had about tragedy repeating itself mess up any chance for a future now that she finally had him back?
