Three Novels by Mary Nichols
Requirements: ePUB, MOBI, PDF Readers, 5.07 MB
Overview: Born in Singapore to a Dutch-South African father and an English mother, Mary Nichols came to England when she was three and considers herself totally English. Her father, like many people who learn English as a second language, would have no sloppiness, either spoken or written, and Mary puts her love of the language down to him. He was also a great reader and there were always books in the house so that Mary learned to read at a very early age. She read anything that came to hand, whether it was suitable or not! By the time she was nine or ten, her one ambition was to be a writer.

Genre: Historical Romance

The Danbury Scandals: When Maryanne Paynter is ten, her beloved mother dies and she is taken by her great uncle to live with the Reverend Mr Cudlipp at Beckford. Her life is unexceptional until, a little before her twenty-first birthday, Viscount Danbury takes her to Castle Cedars, the country estate of the Duke of Wiltshire where she is taken to see the Dowager Duchess, a frail, bedridden old lady who is apparently anxious to make her acquaintance. Furious with the way she is treated Maryanne runs from the house, only to fall into the arms of a mysterious man walking through the woods who seems unusually interested in the occupants of Castle Cedars. She is unsure whether he is a gypsy, a poacher or an escaped prisoner of war, for the war with Napoleon has just ended with the dictator’s defeat and imprisonment of the island of Elba.

Later, she learns that her mother was the daughter of the fifth Duke of Wiltshire, who disowned her when she married a man of whom they disapproved. But now the old man is dead and the dowager is anxious to bring Maryanne back into the family. Instead of returning to the rectory, she is to live with Viscount Danbury and his son, Mark, and spoiled daughter, Caroline.

It is the beginning of a new and bewildering life, not made easier by old scandals and the occasional reappearance of the intriguing man she met in the wood, who seems to have a string of pseudonyms and disguises. There is mystery and danger, a proposal and more scandal and Maryanne, in the thick of it, does not know whom to trust. Mark or the man who calls himself variously le Choucas, Jack Daw or Adam St Pierre?

To Win the Lady: Lacking a son and heir, Mr Henry Paget bequeaths his elder daughter, Georgina, his horse-breeding stables with instructions to take care of her young sister, Felicity, and make sure she makes a good marriage. The stables are some of the best in the country; Henry Paget was renowned for his knowledge of horses, a knowledge he passed on to his daughter. The problem Georgie soon encounters is that men are reluctant to do business with a woman and she is finding it difficult to make the business pay, let alone have time and money to give her sister the come-out she deserves. The arrival of her aunt back from abroad takes the problem of the come-out out of her hands but Georgie is still left trying to convince the equestrian world that she knows what she is doing. When Major Richard Baverstock returns from Waterloo seeking a horse, her life becomes even more complicated. Her aunt is determined to marry Felicity off to Richard and, as her sister’s happiness is more important than her own, Georgie is prepared to promote the match, even when she realises she loves Richard herself. Her life becomes even more complicated when the odious Lord Barbour sets his cap at her, wanting to combine his failing stables with hers and is prepared to employ any means, however dastardly, to have his way. There seems no way out of her dilemma...

The Ruby Pendant: When Lieutenant Pierre Veillard, a French prisoner of war, paints Juliette Martindale's portrait as a French aristocrat in sumptuous clothes of satin and brocade, wearing an ostentatious ruby pendant, and not the gentle, innocent daughter of Viscount Martindale clad in muslin, he sets off an avalanche of mystery, lies and betrayal that threatens her very existence. Her parents are so shocked, Juliette is packed off to London for a Season where she meets Philip Devonshire, a young friend of her father's whom entrusts him to escort her, and a cousin she has never met before who is the heir to the Martindale estate and whom she is expected to marry. She does not like him and cannot understand this haste to have married off, but her mother's reasons are compelling. To avoid it she allows herself to be inveigled into helping some French prisoners of war escape and finds herself in France and here she meets Philippe Devereux, who captures her heart. But no one is who they say they are, danger is everywhere, and she longs to return to England. But how? Who can she trust?
