Overview: My parents, unable to change me, had instead, silenced me. When they'd stilled my hands, they'd taken my words, made me lower my voice to a whisper. Later, I remained silent in defense, refusing to acknowledge the hateful words: Brainiac. Sissy. Antiman. Faggot.

Lincoln de Chabert's life is pretty unremarkable until he comes home from kindergarten and announces he will marry his best friend, Orlando, when he grows up.
His parents spring into immediate action, determined to fix him, igniting an epic battle of wills as Lincoln is determined to remain himself, and marry whom he chooses, at all costs.

From 1964 till 2004, this is a wonderfully written chronology of Lincoln's life. It was absorbing, stirring, heartwarming and uplifting as this reader followed Lincoln from a wee kid making a startling announcement, to setting his eyes on the love of his life when he was a mere 12 year old boy and finally to the year when he could legally marry him in Massachusetts. I really enjoy the writing. Lincoln is such an endearing character. He may seemed effeminate and called a sissy but underneath is steely determination and courage to never give up and live openly as a gay man. His romance with Jose is so much more than the jock and nerd story.
