Overview: France, January 1943. The naval war in the North Atlantic is at its deadliest. A diminished Luftwaffe cannot defend Brittany and its submarine pens from RAF bombers. In the midst of a nighttime air raid, Jean-Louis St-Cyr of the French Surete Nationale and Hermann Kohler of the Gestapo arrive on the coast to investigate an "ordinary" murder." A Breton shopkeeper has been beaten to death with an iron switch-bar. A rare pack of American cigarettes - Lucky Strikes - and fragments of a broken doll found nearby point to a venerated U-boat captain, whose passion is dollcraft. Can it be so simple? The local prefet seems to think so, but St-Cyr and Kohler are not convinced. They must also contend with a fiercely loyal submarine crew, all of whom refuse to put to sea without their captain, their beloved Dollmaker.
