In a world that is dominated by fake news and website clicks, pay walls beckon in a last ditch attempt to salvage some much-needed revenue from the demise of print. Newspaper reporter Michelle Harris is clinging on to her job for dear life.
The last of the old guard at The Firton Echo, Michelle has been sliding down the career ladder as quickly as the bean counters’ burgeoning thirst for a ‘digital first’ newsroom has grown. Half-decent jobs are few and far between and, as the axe falls all around her, Michelle knows, sooner or later, she’ll be consigned to the scrapheap - and hastily replaced by a cheaper, fresh face straight out of college.
In the meantime, she is tapping into a rich vein of exclusives in Firton, a small English market town with one of the highest crime rates per population in the country. Just when she thinks things can’t get any better, a stabbing leaves one dead and the finger of suspicion pointing all over town. She’s on the tail of murder detective Derek Gordon when her bosses pull the plug on her reign at Firton, announcing plans to close the office and relocate some of the staff to an editorial hub more than 20 miles away.
With one month to go before she has to confront the possible end of her career, she’s determined to be first with every twist and turn in the murder investigation. But will her plans to go out in a blaze of glory be shot down by revelations from her past?
A hard-hitting look at life under pressure in an era when austerity has pared every public service to the bone.
