I ran the new Consumer Reports (July 2016) through VirusTotal and got 7 warnings.

Symantec SAPE.Heur.B4257
Malwarebytes PUP.Optional.InstallMonster
Kaspersky not-a-virus:HEUR:AdWare.Win32.InstallMonster.gen
Rising Malware.Undefined!8.C-dhFx6WlkBKT (Cloud)
Qihoo-360 HEUR/QVM11.1.0000.Malware.Gen
AegisLab AdWare.W32.InstallMonster.mhab
ESET-NOD32 a variant of Win32/InstallMonstr.PV potentially unwanted

And why is everything from filescdn now an exe file?

I tried the direct download button and was told that my smartscreen filter wouldn't download the files anyway. The same at numerous other sites where I follow the direction in the forum on exe warnings. What am I doing wrong?

You'll need to disable smartscreen filter if you want to download at all. Even if you are clicking the correct buttons, that annoying filter will block almost everything downloaded from Internet, so if you have a good antivirus program you really don't need it.
