Overview: Smurfette is one of the few female characters in "The Smurfs". Smurfette is a female smurf who was created by Gargamel. In the cartoon she originally had black hair, though this turned blonde when Papa Smurf worked all night to make her a real smurf. Until the creation of Sassette she was the only female Smurf in the village.

Smurfette's story began in the magazine Spirou in 1966. At the end of the story, she left the all-male community of the Smurfs, but made an occasional appearance. In the animated television program developed in the 1980's, Smurfette became a permanent fixture in the storyline. Smurfette was molded from clay by the Smurfs' enemy, Gargamel, in order to use her wiles to cause jealousy and competition amongst the other Smurfs. Placing her in a forest, she encountered Hefty Smurf, who took her to the Smurf Village. She was allowed to stay there, out of the kindness of their hearts. Gargamel's spell was flawed, however, and Smurfette initially appeared unattractive to the other Smurfs. She was obese, with black, spiky hair. She tried to woo the Smurfs, but they regarded her as just another male Smurf, regardless of how kind and considerate she was. Her ugliness only served to annoy the other Smurfs, and they told her that she was putting on weight, to make her feel bad. This trick caused Smurfette to slip into a deep depression. Papa Smurf took pity on Smurfette, and locked himself away with her in his laboratory for several days. When they emerged, Smurfette was beautiful, with long blond hair. This caused almost every Smurf in the village to instantly fall in love with her. Although Grouchy Smurf initially stated that he "hated Smurfette", he drew a heart symbol on a wall, when he was certain that no one was looking.

Alas, Smurfette's beauty did cause jealousy and competition among the Smurfs. She convinced Vanity Smurf to open the water dam to see the water spurt, and in doing so, Vanity flooded the entire village. Papa Smurf expressed his displeasure with Smurfette's problematic influence. Offended, Smurfette told Papa Smurf she would return to the great sorcerer Gargamel. The Smurfs were angered and shocked by the revelation, and Papa Smurf ordered that she be arrested immediately, to face trial for her deception. The proceedings were hintered by the Smurfs' obvious adoration of their newest resident. Brainy Smurf served as the prosecutor, and was booed by the other Smurfs, because of their love of Smurfette. Brainy was unable to find one smurf that would testify against Smurfette. On the contrary, every Smurf supported her, their love undermining any treachery she was responsible for. Smurfette's attorney, Jokey Smurf, told Papa Smurf that he himself was to blame for making Smurfette attractive.

The jury found Smurfette not guilty. However, Smurfette felt guilty for her deception, and ran away into the forest. The Smurfs sought vengeance against Gargamel for his trick by creating a horrific, hulking wart-covered hag that only spoke in the Smurf language. It chased Gargamel through the forest. Smurfette returned occasionally to the village, but her very presence drove the other Smurfs mad. When the Smurfs were deciding who would marry her, Smurfette opted for Grouchy Smurf, thus making it known that the point was moot. The other Smurfs' obssession with Smurfette soon became adoration from afar, and she eventually settled in the Smurf Village. She even learned the Smurf language, in conflict with the straight human language that Gargamel had taught her. Smurfette was the only female Smurf until Sassette "Sassy" Smurf was created. There was also a "Granny Smurf", although her existence was never explained.

Overview: King Smurf (original French title: Le Schtroumpfissime) is the second comic book adventure of the Smurfs, and the name of the main fictional character who assumes power in the absence of Papa Smurf. The story was written and drawn by Peyo with Yvan Delporte as co-writer.

The adventure of King Smurf first started in Spirou magazine in 1964 as Le Schtroumpfissime (cf. illustrissimo — most illustrious — a term sometimes used to flatter European monarchs of the medieval and Renaissance period). While not the second story to appear in Spirou, it was the titular story to be published in book format.
In the original French book edition from 1965, the comic contains two stories, the titular one and Schtroumphonie en Ut, a story about the frustrated efforts of a Smurf to make some acceptable music and being tricked by Gargamel into playing an enchanted musical instrument which has a disastrous effect on his fellow Smurfs.
An English Canadian edition appeared in 1978 by Dupuis in collaboration with Granger Frères Limitée. A later edition was published by Random House. The English edition of the comic appeared in 1997, published by Hodder & Stoughton.
Other translations appeared in German, Dutch, Spanish, Italian, Danish, Polish, Catalan, Chinese and Swedish
King Smurf is a regular Smurf whose actual name and position is never stated in the original adventure in which he is the titular main character.

King Smurf
When Papa Smurf left the village for a few weeks in order to get some Euphorbia leaves (which he needed to complete an herbal potion for undisclosed use), the Smurfs were left with no leader. Arguments and fights ensued when they all claimed the post and were only solved by the decision to have a vote, though at first they all announced that they were voting for themselves.

One particular (but unnamed) Smurf used demagogical tactics and made promises to almost all the Smurfs and they agreed to vote for him. He also put up posters, held a parade, made self-praising election speeches and offered rounds of raspberry juice. Soon, the only other candidate was Brainy Smurf who, as usual, simply claimed that he was the only suitable Smurf since (according to himself only) "Papa Smurf always said so". This arrogance and constant lecturing actually put all the other Smurfs off him.

The Smurf thus won 98% of the votes — the other two going to Brainy Smurf, who was supported by himself, and Clumsy Smurf: the winning Smurf had told him to vote for Brainy Smurf, expecting him to get it wrong when it came to the actual vote.

The winning Smurf then proceeded to put on golden-coloured clothes and asked the others to refer to him as "King Smurf". The Smurfs laughed off his pretence, something he himself did not take with amusement. Instead he resolved to teach them their place and became authoritarian. The Smurfs began to despise him as he became corrupted by power: King Smurf imposed a repressive regime and installed an armed troop of guards led by Hefty Smurf who punished all opposition. He forced the Smurfs into building him a palace and wore them out.

Ironically the only one to show him any real support was Brainy Smurf but, being the sort that goes whichever way the wind blows, he later joined a resistance movement. The rebels based themselves in the forest, insulting and provoking King Smurf from a distance. By offering the other Smurfs gold medals, King Smurf managed to mount an expedition into the forest to confront the rebellion, but it was a failure, with the rebels simply getting more recruits in the process.

To prevent any more defections, King Smurf had the village surrounded by a wooden wall. When he refused to abdicate, the rebels attacked the village. King Smurf's troops fought back by pelting them with tomatoes.

The rebels eventually broke through the wooden wall and the battle carried on inside the village, causing widespread destruction. During the fight, a rebel took explosives from Papa Smurf's laboratory and blew up King Smurf's castle. King Smurf was left helpless with only his guards to support him. He still defiantly refused to stand down and the final fight was about to start when Papa Smurf returned from his journey and demanded to know what was going on.

The sudden return of paternal authority brought an immediate end to the battle and the embarrassed Smurfs had to explain themselves to Papa Smurf. He was very angry with them because they "behaved like humans" and mostly put the blame on King Smurf. Extremely remorseful, ex-King Smurf simply returned to his old home, took a bucket and broom and said he would clean up all the damage the village had suffered. The other Smurfs felt sorry for him and offered their help, claiming it was also their fault, and that they still liked him after all. Ex-King Smurf was touched by this and so was Papa Smurf who forgave them all.

King Smurf's outfit was then used for a scarecrow.

The Smurfs Sports Day
The Olympic Smurfs (original French title: Les Schtroumpfs Olympiques) is the eleventh album of the original French-language Smurfs comic series created by Belgian artist Peyo.

Hefty Smurf decides to organize games to get the other Smurfs to play sports. When the Smurfs hear the prize is a medal, they don't care (sice they already got medals in the King Smurf story), so the prize is changed to a kiss from the Smurfette.

The Smurfs form two teams for the games: yellow team and red team. Nobody wants Weakling Smurf on their team, so Hefty Smurf suggest him to compete on his own. Brainy Smurf decides to be the referee, and has cards of any color, but lacks a whistle, so asks Handy Smurf to make one for him.

The following morning, Hefty Smurf goes to see the Smurfs' training, and finds Weakling Smurf alone, so he goes to wake the others, who then decide to eat breakfast. Hefty Smurf criticises them and tells them to follow Weakling Smurf's example, so they decide to watch Weakling Smurf's training.

Weakling Smurf makes a poor time running. During his hammer-throwing practise, accidentally hits Hefty Smurf's foot when trying to raise the hammer, and then throws it at very little distance. For the high jump, he jumps under the bar, but feels proud since he didn't touch the bar, just like Hefty Smurf told him.

Then comes the training of the other Smurfs. Handy Smurf uses springs for the long jump, which Hefty Smurf tells him is again the rules, but then he notices he hasn't written a rulebook, so Papa Smurf offers his help writing one. In the meantime, the Smurfs train in unorthodox ways, until Hefty Smurf begins crying, so the others promise to take the training seriously during the following days. Papa Smurf arrives with the completed rulebook, but Hefty Smurf tells him they don't need it anymore.

The afternoon before the games, Papa Smurf finds Weakling Smurf, who has decided to leave the games because he will always be a weakling. Papa Smurf gives him a formula he must apply on his nose before any event to win.

The next morning, the games begin with the arrival of the yellow team, the red team and Weakling Smurf (who wears green). Weakling Smurf wins all the events, partly due to the yellow and red teams cheating against each other, and partly due to Papa Smurf's formula. During the last event, the marathon, Weakling Smurf feels too tired to continue, but sits on ivy and runs away, winning the race.

However, Weakling Smurf refuses the medal, saying that, since he used Papa Smurf's formula, he won cheating. Papa Smurf explain the formula was just fruit jelly, so he won fairly the medal and Smurfette's kiss, but before getting the kiss, Brainy Smurf reveals he has a last card for Smurfette: a pink card, so Smurfette decides to walk away with Brainy instead.
