The Picture of Dorian Gray
    Oscar Wilde (Author),

    Publisher: Marvel Comics, 2007

The Picture of Dorian Gray is the only published novel written by Oscar Wilde, first appearing as the lead story in Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine on 20 June 1890. Wilde later revised this edition, making several alterations, and adding new chapters; the amended version was published by Ward, Lock, and Company in April 1891. The story is often miscalled The Portrait of Dorian Gray.

The novel tells of a young man named Dorian Gray, the subject of a painting by artist Basil Hallward. Basil is greatly impressed by Dorian’s physical beauty and becomes strongly infatuated with him, believing that his beauty is responsible for a new mode in his art. Talking in Basil’s garden, Dorian meets Lord Henry Wotton, a friend of Basil’s, and becomes enthralled by Lord Henry’s world view. Espousing a new kind of hedonism, Lord Henry suggests that the only thing worth pursuing in life is beauty, and the fulfilment of the senses. Realising that one day his beauty will fade, Dorian cries out, wishing that the portrait Basil has painted of him would age rather than himself. Dorian’s wish is fulfilled, subsequently plunging him into a series of debauched acts. The portrait serves as a reminder of the effect each act has upon his soul, with each sin being displayed as a disfigurement of his form, or through a sign of aging.

The Picture of Dorian Gray is considered one of the last works of classic gothic horror fiction with a strong Faustian theme. It deals with the artistic movement of the decadents, and homosexuality, both of which caused some controversy when the book was first published. However, in modern times, the book has been referred to as “one of the modern classics of Western literature.”

    Plot:
      Picture of Dorian Gray #1
A new Marvel Illustrated epic begins here! Painter Basil Hallward has done a portrait of a strange subject-youthful Dorian Gray, a man with a mysterious and tangled history. The young man broods on how unfair it is that he will age and his portrait will remain ever young. He wishes with all his might that it were otherwise-and in some bizarre, magical way-it is! This is a novel of dark wonders brilliantly brought to life in the heralded Marvel Illustrated style.
      Picture of Dorian Gray #2
Young Dorian wished that his portrait would bear the marks of age rather than his face. Much to his shock, the painting is, in fact, aging — and Gray is not! While Dorian's face is unchanging, his personality is in ugly ways. He's becoming cruel and secretive, showing a sadistic side of himself that is making those around him fear for their very lives! This is a tale of mounting menace that will send chills down your spine.
      Picture of Dorian Gray #3
Artist Basil Hallward has heard the vile rumors being spread about Dorian Gray, the man whose portrait he painted years ago. He confronts Gray on a fog-shrouded street and demands to know why so many of those close to him have had careers and reputations ruined -- one young man a suicide! Dorian takes the artist to the attic where he keeps his portrait shrouded in canvas and uncovers it to Basil's horror! And the horror is just beginning.
      Picture of Dorian Gray #4
Artist Basil Hallward is horrified at what has become of his beautiful portrait of Dorian Gray. He feels hatred for the painting's subject and confronts Gray in a rage. When Basil then disappears, a perplexed Dorian goes upstairs to cover his portrait -- and finds one of the hands is dripping red! Dorian's downward spiral of self-destruction accelerates, drawing in all those who encounter him!
      Picture of Dorian Gray #5
Dorian is now leading a bizarre double life with his daytime demeanor at dire odds with his nightly existence of decadence and debauchery. But events may be catching up to Dorian as he is stalked through the foggy London streets...by a man out for vengeance. It¹s the penultimate chapter of Wilde's strange and compelling masterpiece.
      Picture of Dorian Gray #6
Having plumbed the darkest depths of depravity, Dorian now wants to reform and become virtuous. More than anything, his tortured soul wishes to love again -- but finds it impossible. And so, in his final throes of agony, the eternally young Dorian Gray confronts the portrait which has so altered his existence. What happens then is the greatest shock of all!

Captain Bintang`s Night-In-With-A-DVD Movie Review Reviewed by Captain Bintang on Aug. 7, 2010.
This movie is an adaptation of the Oscar Wilde story The Picture of Dorian Gray. Don`t know it? Well, here goes - It`s the story of a man who remains young and healthy whilst his painted portrait retains his true image, and ages and corrupts accordingly...
      London, 1891.
Gray (Ben Barnes), a young and handsome lad, arrives in London having inherited his beastly grandfather`s estate. Welcomed into the circle of London high-society, Dorian is introduced to a number of movers and shakers. Basil, a painter and hedonistic Lord Henry Wotton (Colin Firth). Basil paints a strikingly realistic portrait of Dorian, while Henry introduces the youth to the more earthly pleasures of London. Infact Henry seems hell-bent on getting Dorian high on vice. Introduces him to cigarettes and gin, then they`re off to carouse in brothels, smoking opium and roll around with a tart or two.
As Gray gradually puffs and shags his way into a morass of vice and depravity he begins to notice changes in his painting, while he retains his health and beauty. However, others are also noting the change including his sweetheart, Sybil and the painter, Basil...

I want to avoid spoilers, so you can enjoy the movie. But it is grisly fun as we wait to see the painting unveiled. As Dorian`s carousing increases and time goes by, the `young` man locks the portrait away in the attic, where it growls and slobbers behind the canvas.
Dorian Gray is creepy, sexy and looks good. And what a genius, surreal idea - the painting rots as the subject keeps health and youth - brilliant. The movie has an `old fashioned feel` and if you`re after the fast-paced whizzes, bangs, explosive computer imagery or splatter-gore horror, this won`t appeal.
If, however, you want to watch a great adaptation of this supernatural masterpiece - sit back, and enjoy...
      Very good.

While not all of you would be real fans of this particular story, I say real as in NOT the character in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen but rather the dark and haunting figure created by one Oscar Wilde. Though yes the character in Leauge is the same character, this one has no super powers...

The story is of a young man who after seeing a remarkable painting of himself becomes obsessed with his own beauty and basically trades his soul to stay young and beautiful forever (this was never actually stated but its assumed) He chooses to use this gift to indulge in every possible passion he conceives of, drugs, sex, violence... you know much like a rock star, Over the years he gets worse and his painting starts to show the wear on his soul, morphing into a hideous creature.....

The rest is for you to watch or read!

the movie itself was rather close to the true story the lead actor was beautiful and young with just enough acting skill to pull it off, my disappointment was Colin Firth in the role of Lord Henry, the diabolical character who first leads Gray on his journey of destruction. This character to me was always a vulgar yet magnificent man, I simply did not feel it from Colin, it was rather more like Mr Darcy had gotten drunk and fiddled with some ladies... there was no fire or malicious intent behind his actions. The love interest was also rather bland, not very memorable and certainly not an actress I would look for again.

Overall though a rather beautiful visual film, my favourite part of the screening was when Dorian makes love to another man and the girls in the front row of the cinema where screaming oh no stop gross, Arrow and I rather enjoyed mocking them from our seats. The characters are all fairly awful in their own way and the morals and high ground Oscar wrote his story from come through quite nicely while also providing a nice bit of sexy time.

I would give it a 6, watch it for fun but wait til it comes out on DVD
