New releases of NX1 will be in 3 standard downloads.



1 - PROGRAMS - ALL PDA CABS and the windows desktop installer.

2 - DATA-FOLDER - Either VGA or QVGA

3 - Optional Add-ins - 'Birdsongs' folder if you want to hear bird songs


In future releases you will only need to download the PROGRAMS.
If new releases have extra or amended data there will be a DATA-FOLDER UPDATE download to upgrade your data set. Optional add-ins can be downloaded and used at any time.


You don't need to download the Data-Folder if you already have downloaded it for v5.0!
You can delete all MP3 files from the /NatureExplorer/BIRDS/ folder and this will save 16mb.

If you only have an earlier version's data folder (NATUREDATA or NATUREDATA1) I advise downloading the latest data folder.


I intend to keep this download format in the future, so people will not have to keep downloading everything, with every new release.

This release also has changes to the code to avoid the hang-ups and errors that previous versions caused. I have stopped using MP3 birdsong files as the FMOD library caused errors with 20percent of users' PDAs. I now use WAV files of much better quality and use the inbuilt WAV player to play them so keeping errors within-house. This makes the bird song fileset larger and this is why I have made it an OPTIONAL add-in (a 41mb download). So that those who are not so interested in the Birds topic do not have to download them. For those of us who are interested in hearing birdsongs, the quality of the sounds have been improved from the gritty sounding MP3 files.

Also I have removed some instances of errors in which the program could not 'see' the data folder because of changes in Windows Mobile system since v6.1.

Birds have secondary photos as with Pocket Birds.

The feature that Pocket Birds has that I want to make as an add-in feature in some way, is the larger images that show a bird's various plumages, winter/summer, young/adult. I am working on these images to try to reduce them to fit the screen so that the various plumages can be seen. This will not be in 'large image' form though.

The bird habitat graphical menu is still there.

Bird songs are greatly improved from the old mp3 files. I created the new songs from CD Quality originals afresh.

Is big differencies between index structure of Nature explorer and Pocket Birds of Europe for translation?

Pocket Birds and Nature Explorer-Birds lists are different. The ref number for each bird is last in PB but the first data in NX.

But some topics don't have Latin names so they will have a different index list layout.

I am creating an index editor for NX at the moment. It will be available soon.

Sarah I installed version 5.1 and when I run any program I get an error-Mising File: / My Storage / Program Files / Nature Explorer 1/BTN_song_offv.JPG.,
The program simply goes crazy and starts spinning the slides one after another.,
This happens in all programs, not only in birds.,
I installed folder of birdsong in NatureData folder, not the Birds so this is not a problem.,
I will try to repeat the whole process of copying data folder and install the program.,

Me too the same error occurs!
But the problem is in the program code. When we click on "next" button the error occurs, but if we click on the "back" button works without problems.
The sounds in this release have not given any kind of error.

Sorry guys, I must have omitted that file in the CAB. If it is missing the program does go out of control scrolling thru the records madly. Why it does that I honestly do not know.

I have reposted the PROGRAMS download with an updated QVGA CAB.

Hi Sarah,

i have been using this app for sometime but am stuck on version 4 as when i install any of your latest versions, i keep getting the following message as soon as i select a category:

File error:'index0.txt'

Any ideas? I have a HTC HD mini.

Have you downloaded the data folder along with the CAB?

In V4.x the data folder was 'NATUREEXPLORER'.

In 5.0 it became 'NATUREEXPLORER1'.

V5 has a new data folder and if you don't have it you will get this error.

now works, i did download and copy across the sub folders but didn't rename the main data folder with 1 on the end. Lovely app by the way.
