Hi ponrepo,
trying to download gives an error: not easy to understand. Seems like the file is no more there.
Tks

Sarah can you please, please, please, please, please, work on porting this for Android. Its 2 years since I moved from a WM device and I still miss your original bird guide, it was great. I see you are using an Android development tool, all I can do is hope.

Hi Pete (and Ponrepo),

Yes, I have been playing with B4Android with the idea of making Android versions of the freeware. My problem is that I don't have an android device myself. So I can not test things out on real devices, only on the Android emulation software. :(

Sarah I'm so sorry, if I had known I would have sent you my previous Android phone as I've just upgraded :-( How about if I send a donation of £30 (thats what I sold the old phone for) so you can invest it in a device (there are LOADS of second hand ones on eBay). I'd also be happy to test whatever you create on my device (I have the new LG 3D device which is free on bargain contracts at http://www.buymobilesphones.net ) for you if thats of interest.

Regards and thanks, Pete

Hi Pete

Can you tell me what screen sizes your old and new phones are? Because I am wondering how this screen sizing works with Android devices. I have been doing little tests with HVGA and Android 2.2. Is this standard?

I did see some android phones on eBay but I wondered if they were not standard enough to work with. Were both of your devices touch-screen?

Best wishes

Sarah

Hello again, my old phone (Samsung Galaxy Spica) was HVGA (320x480) the new one (LG 3D) is 800x480 and my first Android device (HTC Tattoo) was QVGA (320x240). I believe that after version 2 of Android there is some kind of automatic screen sizing? If you look at the Android section for SatNav releases on this forum you will see some references to screen sizes being "wrong" on early releases.

A device that might be of interest to you is the well regarded HTC HD2, which is a Windows Mobile 6.5 device that can be setup to offer Dual Boot in either WM 6.5 or Android. It should be fairly inexpensive these days on eBay. Google "HTC HD2 dual boot" to find plenty of links. The other device thats cheap but quiet well regarded and well supported with mods/updates is the Orange San Francisco (ZTE Blade). These were only about £100ish new (and has a capacitive screen!) on Pay as You Go.
Some of the other "cheaper" Android phones (HTC Wildfire etc.) have QVGA screens (low res) and under powered processors.

All Android phones are touch screen, cheaper ones tend to be "resistive" (ie only one finger input) and more expensive ones use "capacitive" screens (giving multi touch input ie pinch to shrink/zoom).

Theres plenty of expert developers who I'm sure would be happy to advise you on the XDA developers forum for both WM and Android devices.

480x320 and Android 2.2 would be about average for a device these days :-)

Pete

p.s. we seem to be going off topic so feel free to PM me.

p.p.s the T-Mobile Pulse (NOT the Pulse mini) aka Huawai 8220 seems to be a REALLY cheap option too with specs similar to the ZTE Blade

link to one on eBay at the mo' http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/T-Mobile-Puls ... 3cbaf0e6aa

Pete & Ponrepo:

I would need an Android device in order to make Android versions of the Birds and other Nature programs.

So I will watch the eBay device in the link you kindly found. I have little optimism on getting it though. Mostly I have been outbid on eBay because most people seem to have more money to throw at things on that site than I do. :?

It would not be practical to have someone else test program code out. Programming is an endless testing and improvement task. There would be too many 'tests'!

Sarah

Sarah, my advice with ebay is NEVER to bid more than you are happy to pay, if your comfortable maximum is outbid, just wait for another item to come along. Try to bid on things as late as possible (20 seconds MAX before bidding ends) using your MAXIMUM bid (it will only bid up to this if needed), and try to find things ending during the working day,ie on mid week days when there are less punters about.

However, returning to the subject matter...........due to your indication of interest in Android and my earlier offer of help I have made a donation to your "Android device fund" via paypal as promised.

I honestly believe your stuff will be VERY well received by the Android community.

Regards and best wishes, Pete

Dear Pete

Thank you for your kindness. I will use your donation to try to win this eBay device for development of a new Android Birds program with other nature programs later.

Ebay is a strange place to buy things. It all happens in the last minute of sale and I have been outbid literally in the last few seconds, as you say, it all happens in the last in the final 20 seconds. I will let you know how it goes tomorrow. :)

Best wishes

Sarah

Your most welcome Sarah, I'll try and help out again when I can.

Good luck on eBay, but remember what I said about fixing your maximum bid and being patient if you miss that one, theres plenty more.

There are loads of Orange San Francisco phones on there at the mo'

Pete

p.s. I have an Android development book in PDF form if its of interest.
