Paegniarius

Image

The paegniarius (pl. Paegniarii), from the ancient Greek παίγνιον, paignion, or "comic show", was one of the gladiatorial classes (sometimes referred as "personnel associated with gladiators") that appeared during the representations that took place inside the arena.
Very little is known about this "gladiatorial" figure. It was a parodic figure, deputed to entertain the public during the long interval of noon or in the intermezzo between two combats that staged simulated fights, equipped with wooden or blunt weapons.
The paegniarius wore a tunic and neither a helmet nor a shield, but wore protective wrappings on his lower legs and head. Was armed with a whip and was holding a stick from the curved end.
Their farcical representations were accompanied by bands, with music played with trumpets and hydraulis, the hydraulic organ with musicians dressed up as animals. In a graffiti of Pompeii is represented one of these parodies, in which appear musicians disguised in a bear playing the flute (ursus tibicen) and in a chicken that plays the horn (pullus cornicen).
A scene in a mosaic of Nennig (picture), in Germany, is often interpreted as a representation of this gladiator. The fighters hold a whip in their right hands and carry a wooden board fastened on their left arm.
Suetonius, in the biography of Caligula, tells how the emperor had come to replace the paegniarii in the arena, for the farcical fights, with fathers of family who had a physical handicap.

Congrats, Elle! :D
