Lector
In a Cuban cigar factory

Image

Lectores (Spanish for "readers") work in a cigar factory entertaining the workers by reading books, newspapers, recipes, personal letters, etc. aloud and are paid for by workers pooling their money.
The practice originated in Cuba, and is still known there today, where there are about 200 lectores.
Lectores were introduced in 1865 to educate and relieve boredom among cigar workers.
Lectores, and their reading material, are chosen by the workers of the cigar factory.

As of 2017, UNESCO is considering designating the profession a form of “intangible cultural heritage”.

The names of cigars such as Montecristo, Sancho Panza and Romeo y Julieta among a few others were choosen by the workers of the cigar factories to honour their favorite readings.
