With Cromwell's reign of terror at an end, England indulges itself in previously forbidden pastimes, and the Hellfire Club holds sway over a scene of decadence. In Europe, the embers of the Wars of Religion still smoulder. In the New World, the colony of Roanoke has vanished.
All these things and a succession of strange crimes attract Erlin's attention... and that of his sister, Reka.
