Requirements: CBR Reader. 50 MB.
Overview: The Future Foundation was created by Mr. Fantastic to bring humanity into a greater future after his dissatisfaction with Earth's leading scientific community.

      The Human Torch has died.
The Fantastic Four is no more.
      Welcome to tomorrow.
      Welcome to the Future Foundation.

"Enjoyed the read and pick up all 6 covers. Great starting point for someone who hasn't been in the Fantastic Four universe for nearly three years. My only concern: Why Spider-Man? I know that Human Torch will return soon enough, but as a devoted reader of Amazing Spider-Man I don't want to see Peter Parker being stretched too thin between too many titles the way Wolverine has been recently." -- Reviewed by kevinhatescameras on March 25, 2011.

      History:
The Future Foundation was created by Mr. Fantastic to bring humanity into a greater future after his dissatisfaction with Earth's leading scientific community.
After becoming discouraged by how Earth's scientists viewed science and its applications, Mr. Fantastic formed a new group to create a better future for all of humanity. Gathering some young, great minds, Mr. Fantastic planned to mold them into a team that would come up with solutions to the world's problems. Among these brilliant minds were Alex Power (the oldest member of the family superhero team known as Power Pack), the young mutants Artie and Leech, the Subterranean Moloids known as Tong, Mik, Korr, and Turg, a now inelegant Dragon Man, the young clone of super villain the Wizard named Thirty-Two and Reed Richards own daughter Valeria.

This band of adventurers have been solving a few complicated problems since their founding, including a serum that would change the Thing back in to Ben Grimm one week out of the year. The group however could not stop the events that led to a member of the Fantastic Four to apparently die in battle. While the group was in the Negative Zone trying to close a gate through which an army of insectoids called the Annihilation Wave were planning to enter Earth through the dimensional gate in the Baxter Building. Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch sacrificed himself to close the gate manually on the wrong side of the portal. It was the only way to do it, according to Valeria and Thirty-Two.

The seeming demise of the Human Torch left the Fantastic Four devastated and incomplete. The group disbanded soon afterward. It was revealed that all the other members of the old Fantastic Four team will be joining the Future Foundation, including new member Spider-Man.

FANTASTIC FOUR #587's Big Character Death
Fantastic Four #587 is clear: Johnny Storm, the fan-favorite Human Torch introduced in 1961's Fantastic Four #1, is the team member that meets his demise in the issue.

I think You're Crazy Reviewed by djotaku on Sept. 29, 2011.

I'm not quite sure how he does it, but Hickman (along with his artists) manages to make a book in which most of the action happens off screen extremely interesting. I think it's because he fundamentally understands the characters he's writing and the tensions between them. Particularly great is the writing and art when it comes to Reed Richards and Black Bolt. Black Bolt doesn't even speak and we get the tension there between deep friends (or at least long-time colleagues) and what each believes is the best course of action. Hickman's Spider-Man has also improved as FF has gone on. His "wife comment" in this issue is pure Parker.

This issue picks up exactly where the last one left off. And Doom deals with Diablo's treachery in a very Doom-like way. Just those first two pages with Doom really got the book off to an awesome start. And, as only one of the great comic writers can do, it REALLY sets up a contrast with what happens to Doom later on in the issue. And it's stuff like this that makes me able to tolerate Hickman's glacial pace.

Interstingly, the Universal Inhumans appear to have a very Doom-like attitude and I think this hubris will lead to problems in the two issues we have left in this story arc. (if I am remembering correctly that it would end at issue 11) They are brutal in their administration of Justice, but even though they only capture 2/3 evil Reeds, they remain certain this is all they need and that they have solved the situation in a satisfactory manner. Time will tell if that comes back to bite them in their inhuman butts - and with Hickman, the payoff could even be years and another story arc away.

The ending has some members of the Future Foundation going through a door that takes you where you are supposed to be. This is such a fascinating philosophical device that I'm surprised it hasn't been the subject of its own Marvel comic series. What does it mean for there to be a place you're supposed to be at? After all, how are you supposed to be anywhere other than where you are at the moment? It implies a wisdom to the universe or something like that. I can't wait to see what it means for Hickman within this story. I know it won't be as simple as putting them whereever they need to be to save Sue - at least not for all the FF members involved. Otherwise it would be a very boring use of such a great plot device.

If you've been keeping up with FF you know you MUST buy this issue. If not, the first five issues are out in hardcover - catch up anyway you can and read this.

"Fantastic Four moves from blue to white with new Marko Djurdjevic redesigns". by David Pepose, posted on Wednesday, February 9th, 2011 at 12:38 pm

Johnny Storm may be gone, but the Fantastic Four is living on, with Marvel releasing a new character redesign by Marko Djurdjevic. Featured in this lineup is Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, the Thing and — perhaps not surprising to many — the Amazing Spider-Man.

    Image

“The point of these new costumes is to really hammer home that everything is fresh and new in the series again — and that it feels like a black-and-white world, following Johnny’s death,” Marvel Tom Brevoort SVP of Publishing wrote in the image above. “Marko Djurdjevic took my suggestion of ‘white outfits’ and ran with it. The hexagonal emblems were all him.”

What say you on all this? Are these monochromatic outfits a fashion faux pass, or is this redesign as Fantastic as the team who inspired them? Only one thing’s for certain — Spider-Man is going to have to get a bigger closet.

You know an issue is serious when Reed Richards brings Doctor Doom in for a consult. However, can Doom, Richards and the rest of the Marvel Universe's scientific minds outsmart three evil Reeds?

    The Good
Hoo boy, do I ever love mad scientists. In this issue Reed Richards has managed to assemble some of the greatest scientific minds in the Marvel Universe into one room, and the results are actually quite hilarious. Seeing the Mad Thinker enter into a "what if he knows we know?" paradox with himself while Doctor Doom takes some potshots just made me laugh. It truly paints a picture of a group of smart men who can be exceedingly dumb if they all try to work together.

At the centre of all this is Reed Richards, who, up until this point, has been a beacon of optimism and logic in the Marvel Universe. Faced with the daunting task of outsmarting three alternate versions of himself, he seems legitimately hopeless. I don't mind this, as it brings a sense of threat into a situation that would normally fixed with some kind of last-minute relelation by Mister Fantastic.

I'm also enjoying the manipulation at the hands of the alternate Reeds; everything kind of fits into a last-minute plot that isn't really revealed until the final couple pages. This works, however, because we've seen the buildup all through the issue. It isn't pulled out of a magic hat: it's established and thought out carefully.

    The Bad
I'm not sure Jonathan Hickman is trying to do with Sue Storm and Spider-Man. In a couple issues of Future Foundation, they've had these panels that could be construed as bedroom eyes by Sue, but nothing's been explicitly stated. Clearly, these panels mean something, but it's not exactly clear what they are: could Marvel's picture-perfect marriage be on the verge of crumbling? Is Sue craving the pool boy, so to speak? Or is it just me overreacting?

I don't like children in comics, especially in giant team books: though Alex from the Power Pack is a capable hero in his own right, seeing the rest of the FF's brood terrorize the Thing just makes me feel sorry for him. At least it's good that we know that his skin provides suction for NERF darts, right?

    The Verdict
FF's only four issues in and it's getting to the meat of an adventure: I like this. Sometimes series take too long to get going, and as a result they come off flat. I'll be adding FF to my pull list based on this issue, as I'm genuinely curious as to what happens next. I'm hoping that Doom continues to be a presence in this book, enmity with Richards aside: I mean, he is one of the foremost scientific minds in the (Marvel) world, and a badass character to boot. Keep an eye out for issue five to bring us into the thick of the FF's newest challenge.

The Anticipation Is Killing Me Reviewed by el33tcapitan on July 13, 2011.
Right when it feels like all hell is about to break loose on Earth, Hickman takes a step back to remind us of the history of the Inhumans and that's really where most of my half-star deduction comes from. I want to know what's gonna happen!

The other part of the half star comes from involving the Inhumans. I'm still getting a grip on just who they are, so it was pretty confusing, but fans who have access to Fantastic Four #577 should take a few minutes to re-read the issue to really get the breadth of what Hickman is setting up.

Ultimately the thing I respect most about Hickman is the thing that makes this book such a tough read. Hickman doesn't baby his readers. He expects us to go back and figure out precisely what's going on to have an idea about what's going on.

My first reading of the book was confusing and the book was difficult to parse, but when I went back after reading #577 again it all seemed much clearer and way cooler. Hickman's work with the first family always seems to boil down to fate vs. free will and his thematic consistency continues in FF#6. Hickman's other pet FF theme, fathers and sons, is also borne out as the Supreme Intelligence and the Kree are a father species, of sorts, that forsook their offspring and that offspring came back to make them pay for their crimes.

The growing fear within the Supreme Intelligence was conveyed beautifully in the art. Tocchini deserves commendation even if I wish that FF would stabilize their artist selection and stop shifting so much.

This book is not for new readers. Wait for the trades and pick up Hickman's Fantastic Four while you're at it. The rest of us may need to refresh our memories, but Hickman's building momentum for something big. I can feel it and I can't wait.

The first 11 issues are under the 'cape' of Fantastic Four. After issue 11, the series returned to it's original name; Fantastic Four.
However this series continued as well, and stands on it's own from issue 12 and on.

Getting Close to the End Reviewed by djotaku on Dec. 30, 2011.
While I'm not keen on Bobillo's art, I do really like that he makes Valeria and the other kids actually look their age. The story is going at a very slow pace and I'm very anxious to see just how Hickman ties the the events of FF and Fantastic Four together. It started off as a story about the Reeds back in Fantastic Four then it added in the Universal Inhumans and the Kree. Now those stories appear to have split off, but they're still somewhat related. I'd like to see just how it all fits together. Hickman is doing a great job with the story; I just think with how much he's cramming into the story that this is going to read as a phenomenal trade while those of us reading the monthlies are dying to see where it all eventually leads to! After all, it's been over two years (issue 570 Oct 2009) since this story started. The story telling has been phenomenal but we need some climax!

This story continues from last week when they decided to help grey Reed. They go through the portal and we get to see (again or for the first time depending on how long you've been reading Marvel comics) just how powerful Franklin is.

There's also some more flashback to Val and Nate working together.

FF turned out to be my favorite issue this week and I used it for my POW!. If you want to see me debate the merits of the issue with Dan (it is spoileriffic so know that going in), then check it out here

Twenty-Eight Minutes Reviewed by thanosrules on Jan. 27, 2012.

        Highly Recommended!

Things finally came together for me on this issue. While I enjoyed the previous issues, I didn't quite fully embrace all the various plot streams until this part of the arc. It was one simple drawing, one simple explanation in the book that did it for me - the flashback where Val and Nathaniel work on the "end of the world timing issue" together.

The art still feels strange, but I am getting use to it. It doesn't distract me from the story any longer - which is good, because this part of the story was just great - the flashbacks really helped solidify the message, instead of confuse it this time around. This was likely due to things wrapping up in this issue. Either way, this issue really made me feel glad I stuck with the series and trusted things would pan out.

I was pleased to see what came of the Celestial Finger Tips - and how the team dealt with the issues they presented. I was also very pleased with how the Ultimate Nullifier was factored in, used and experienced within the story. It is always a tricky object for a creative team to work with, you never know exactly how things will end up.
