On your search for shangri-la you are inprisoned by a tribe living in a remote area. The crime you committed , well we won't go into that.
Your prison is a circular enclosure with a radius of 250m.The wall surrounding your prison is 20m high. All of the land is planted with different crops.
The judge takes you to the centre where he shows you a 30cm high sapling. The Judge says"This is a Dragon moon tree, it is fast growing and sacred to us. if you uproot it or kill it we will behead you." he pauses to make a notch in the trunk 1cm above the ground. When that notch is the same height as the top of your head then you will be released. As it is midsummer day we give you a gift. If you can work out in 24 hours exactly how long it will take for the notch to grow to the same height as your head then when you are released you may take with you your weight in gold and jewels. the tree grows 0.015789 cm per hour of daylight, and 0.0015789 cm per hour of moonlight.Daylight today lasts for 12 hours and decreases daily by 5 minutes 37 seconds until the winter solstice.when it increases by the same amount.Tonight is the first night of the full moon. The moon always rises at dusk and sets at dawn. It is now mid day and dusk is at 6.00 pm. Your height has been measured at 1m 87cm.
There are gardeninng tools here for you to tend the crops so you will have food to eat.Goodbye.
The following morning you called the guards , not only were you released but you took with you your weight in gold and jewels.

1) How long would it take for the notch to grow to the top of your head?
2) why did they release you?
questions may be asked to which the answer is yes or no

1) the notch in the trees will never reach that point. Trees grow from the buds outward. In other words, where a bud forms, the growth occurs at the tips of the branches as they develop from those buds. Branches and trunk increase in girth (thickness) but their length and position remains relatively constant except at the ends where the growth occurs, or where buds form and create new branches. Think about this. If the trunk continued to get taller from the bottom up, fruit farmers would have a difficult time picking their fruit after the tree got very old since the lowest branches would continue to get higher off the ground.
1)Absolutely Correct , well done Tattle, sob, sob, sob I was eagerly expecting some intricate calculations
2) the man pointed this fact out to the tribe and he was released for his knowledge.

2) Nowhere close

Ouch... seems to be a 'clash' of wise men here...

/me will humbly wait for Sherlocx's reply before asking a question... ;)

(I was asking myself if eventually the notch was to deep and the sapling didn't survive the night...)
The Dragon Moon Tree thrives and became the wonder of the entire area

For your information... I did the calculation! Not only it rhymes, but I have a result: it would take 13 years, 6 months, 10 days and 2 hours to reach your height of 1 m 87 if the tree would grow from the base. But! Your name is Michael Jordan, and you are in your early 15 years old... still growing. You call the guards and tell them you can't calculate the riddle as long as you're not full-grown. The guards get impressed - not because you are right - but they are heavy basketball fans, and release you after an early but crowded signature-session followed by a demonstration and a challenge: you play with the tribe against another tribe and you win as much gold and jewels in weight as as you score... which is as much as your weight. But that's pure coincidence and - agreed - somewhat forcing the story. Being a happy end, you can't mind, do you? ;)

You need to get out more Zacharie and get a life, They are showing Midnight Cowboy next Wednesday at the cinematek ( BozarZone)
And no that is not the answer

Aaaah.... you ate the tree so it can't be checked any more!!!!!

Ouch... wrong riddle?

Or... you dig a hole beside the sapling which is deep enough that you can stand in with the top of your head the same height as that notch... While digging you discover the ground is very soft. You dig a tunnel to escape... While running away you are just in time to save a woman from a wild animal in a way I can't explain now because it would lead us to far... It has something to do with challenging the lion to solve a riddle which takes really long to solve (you are so smart not to use one of Sherlocx's) that it leaves you plenty of time to get away with the lady. Eventually you find out the lady you saved is married to one of the guards, so you go back to your prison trough your tunnel and call the guard. You tell him what happened and the guard is so happy he jumps around like a child... and falls into the hole you just dug. To cut the story short: the guard breaks his neck, you marry the widow - who happens to be the chief's daughter - and he gives you your weight in jewels and gold if you promise to take her with you to save her from the tsunami the tribe's weather forecaster predicted that will wipe away the whole island soon...

Sigh the answer is you dig a hole and stand in it.
