Well one could be obvious n say Lord of the Rings but excluding the books that everybody knows are great I would choose the Graydon Saunders Commonweal series. Does for fantasy what The Mote in Gods Eye did for SF.

I recently enjoyed the book "You can't spell America without Me" by Alec Baldwin & Kurt Anderson. Shows the times we live in pretty well...

Fredrick Bachman, a Swedish writer whose written works include:

Connected Books:
Beartown (2017)
Us Against You (2018)

Standalone Novels:
A Man Called Ove (2014)
My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry (2015)
Britt Marie Was Here (2016)

Short Stories/Novellas:
And Every Morning the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer (2016)
The Deal of a Lifetime (2017)

His books deal with death, loneliness, isolation, rape as well as quirkiness, humour, love, support and friendship but there's no 'soap' serial, indulgence in pain and indignity. His prose is never over-complicated and, in some ways he reminds me of Terry Pratchett who (minus the fantasy) had a similar capacity to portray human life, complete with all its flaws without compromise or sentimentality but, at the same time, with compassion, affection and sympathy. His novels are not so much concerned with adversity, but the means by which people find the courage to face it. He also has Pratchett's capacity to point out the obvious, particularly when it comes to human nature, in such a way that I, for one, can't help but respond with an, "oh yes, never thought of it that way but he's right!"
