Yup. I have used that site too.
Hmm. I could perhaps use a tag on the final book of the series when I have some reasonable hope it is. Maybe "LB" for "last book"? It might be a help to readers although not much for organising the library. My recent policy is to do a full revamp for each author as I get round to them. That or simply delete them as underperforming.

I don't organize my ebooks because i don't like ebook. haaahaaa i'm kidding but i really don't organize my ebooks. I use calibre for ebooks in english and ebook in french. And the author name. Just for a quick search.
I don't keep my ebooks for long because ebook is for me just a way to discover an author, a book. If i don't like a book, i delete it. If i really like a book i buy it.
I love paperback, i need the book.
For the moment, I'm taking a break from shopping because I have too many books to read. Ebook more than paperback :lol:

Hmm. I think this question goes here but lets see.

Got a library rapidly approaching 20,000 books in 1600 folders. 1 for each author. Also, sadly approaching 16GB. I can squeeze the size down by compressing the covers using calibre. Only takes about a day. Catch is I lose the folders and I need them. I can create an empty copy of the folders and then refill them by hand but it's a tad time consuming. So is there a plausible way to avoid the manual labor and the therapy that I will need afterwards? It doesn't have to be fast. I can run on my backup laptop.

Current thoughts run to 3 possible approaches:
1) Figure out how to get calibre to do what I want.
2) Find some sort of utility that recreate the folders after calibre spits out the files to a single folder.
I am thinking in terms of something that will add the folder names to file names before calibre gets to them, use the addon to file them in the right folders after, then strip off the addon.
3) Use a batch file that will find & replace all the original files in all their subfolders with the new identically named files from their single folder

OK. Solved it..... It is a bit complicated.
Assume The following:

1) I have a library called C:\Users\user\Desktop\5.0alt\5.0 which uses subdirectories but no subsubdirectories

2) I have Added all the Ebooks in the library (and no others) to calibre.

3) I have converted all files to Epub INCLUDING all that are already Epub when prompted.

4) I have used Calibre's "save to disk" function to save all files to a single directory called C:\Users\user\Desktop\5.0alt\Converted

5) I have deleted all files in that directory that are not the wanted converted to epub files.

6) I have made a note of all the epub Ebooks from C:\Users\user\Desktop\5.0alt\5.0 that failed to convert. I have also remove any that failed to convert but were NOT already epub (although I could as a last step put any back that are readable).

7) I have used "Bulk Rename Utility" to put the epub extension on all ebooks in C:\Users\user\Desktop\5.0alt\5.0. There are other ways to do it, but Its a really useful utility.

Right. At this point I should have two libraries containing the same number of Ebooks with identical names.C:\Users\user\Desktop\5.0alt\5.0 has all the files in the subdirectories where I want them but a lot of them have faked extension and a lot of them are bigger than they really need to be. C:\Users\user\Desktop\5.0alt\Converted has all the files in genuine Epub and trimmed of excess fat. So now for the tricky bit....

8 ) I create a text file and type into it:

for /d %i in (*) do xcopy C:\Users\user\Desktop\5.0alt\Compressed "%i" /L /F /U /K /Y

9) I Open Command prompt utility and type in CD C:\Users\user\Desktop\5.0alt\5.0

10) I then copy the command in the text file to the command prompt.
This command does NOTHING except to pretend that is is transfering all files from C:\Users\user\Desktop\5.0alt\Converted to the proper subdirectories in C:\Users\user\Desktop\5.0alt\5.0

11) I examine VERY CAREFULLY the messages in the command line window to ensure that the source and destination folders are correct. This is IMPORTANT because it is perfectly possible to trash everything with the next command. And by that I mean the whole hard disk.

12) If I am VERY SURE the output was to C:\Users\user\Desktop\5.0alt\5.0 I then copy the same command again with the "/L" removed. I am copying from a text file rather than typing in directly so I am ABSOLUTELY SURE it is EXACTLY the same command. It will now do the actual copy.

13) I inspect any files that were originally epub but failed to convert and remove or replace any that won't open.

14) Job done. C:\Users\user\Desktop\5.0alt\5.0 now has all the Ebooks exactly where they were but some are smaller and all are Epub.

Calibre. Simple.

Can search by Author, Title or series. And can read the synopsis.

I also have a word document with list of favorite authors, series and notes about forthcoming books, though https://www.fantasticfiction.com is a good way to keep track of new fiction books.

I use iBooks and Kindle. On iBooks I sort by genre, using my own genre labels (ie. Lady Porn for erotica, lol)....On Kindle, I drop them in and have it sorted by “recent”.

A great book should leave you with many experiences, and slightly exhausted at the end. You live several lives while reading. - William Styron

I don't use reading devices like kindle so I save all my books on my laptop and use Calibre's e-reader to read them (regardless of their format, including pdf, text files, etc.) I can also use my browser for pdf files and my wordpad or notepad for text files. :)

I use folders within folders, too. It depends on what categories you want. For example, you could have a folder with romance novels and subfolders for different sub-genres.

I use the format:
author name - series name (so the series stay together) - title of the book
for the file names.

I sort my books into individual folders depending on what it is, If it's a series, Then all books of that series go into a folder, If it's a series with multiple sub-series, Then each of them get's it's own folder, But if it's the works of a certain author, Again, It'll get it's own folder.

Calibre (to sort the ebooks by author/genre/series) on your PC. There is nothing else you should be using. This is a very intuitive programme so don't hesitate to start using it if you ain't already.

Then on my android tablet/smartphone I use Calibre Companion which transfers my exact set up 1:1 from Calibre to my device. Think iTunes but for ebooks.

If you are a comic book reader I suggest you simply use ComicRack which is also like Calibre but with an overlay for comics that makes the experience more intuitive. But, I prefer the simplicity of Perfect Viewer which I think is a better app as it does what I want simply and quickly.

Author folder or series folder of its a lot of different authors in a series, like Wild Cards or Shadowrun. Like you said, I know where it's all at.

I use folders, something like this

English

- Fiction
* Literature
+ author
* Historical
+ author
* Crime/thriller
+ author
* etc

- Non Fiction
* (auto)Bio
+ name
* History
* 19th century
+ author
* 20th century
+ author
* etc

Other language(s)

* see above

Something like this, you get the idea.

I use calibre (indispensable) for uploading my ebooks to my reader after adding metadata etc.
Also for backup of my library on my reader in case of a malfunction or accidental reset.

Seems like everyone out there is using calibre as a must. I'm using it only as raw DRM remover (and with the right settings it's flying)

How useful is having all the books on calibre?
*If I need to search for X book I can use "Everything"
*if I need to read a book I use the kindle
*Converting books? Huge nope, and if i need a certain book there are billions of online software that can do the job without much mess

Maybe is nice to have as a database but again if I need to search for a particular book's info (isbn, year of publication etc) I can rely on the many sites whom calibre is getting the info's from..

Even to see duplicates files I use Treesize so even here calibre isn't much helping me.

But I'm talking of big libraries (my one is around 60.000 books). Yet I know people whom works with irc books packages they use calibre to release the monthly updates (around 10gb worth of books/month).. So no idea on this..

Perhaps I'm not that geeky to understand the usefulness of it :)

I Always sort them by author and for this I also use an Excell file. This for me is the easiest way to know if I have the book or not and which one I would like to have. I use different colours to mark them too. For a stranger it looks a bit odd but I'm happy with my system.
