In the margin of our newly started service Signatures and Avatars, I'd like to start a topic about elementary graphical 'tricks' that can make our stay and activities on this forum interesting, more attractive and at the same time instructive. Little tutorials that do the job, without having to follow/read complicated and voluminous manuals about graphical programs from which we never use the biggest part.

Initially, m0o5 agreed to cooperate in this project. This doesn't mean any other user(s) with graphical knowledge may jump in and share his knowledge about the concerned subject.

Please post here any question or problem that you might have encountered while posting on this forum, and we will try to guide you in your query.

How to bypass the 25 KiB limit for avatar.

Image

For avatars larger than 25 KiB :

Copy the image URL (right click on image, copy image address)

Go to your avatar settings (UCP » Profile » Edit avatar)

Paste the URL in the Link off-site field.

      Image

    Press Submit. Et voilà!

How to get rid of an image's white background?

    Image

First : We need some photo editing software! Windows' built-in Paint isn't quite enough, Adobe Photoshop or the GIMP is probably too much, so today we'll be using the lesser known Paint.NET; an open-source freeware editor with all the essentials, including tools to crop, rotate, and resize images, adjust colors, and create collages.

    Image

It is also released (and reviewed) here on your own Mobilism.org.

The picture we're using is this one : Download this image to your computer.

      Image
       (Right click, Save Image ...)

    Open the image in Paint.NET

In Paint.NET, choose the tool : Image Magic Wand! Image

With the magic wand, click once somewhere in the white space surrounding the phone.

      Image
(The whole image will be selected, except the phone)

    Press Ctrl-X to cut.

      Image
      (The gray squares indicate transparency)

Now go to File » Save As... And save the file as a .PNG

    And we're done! :D

    Image

A bit more info about the magic wand tool :
You can set it's tolerance! If you select it, it's the blue/grey bar at the top of your screen.

    Image

Some other useful key-combo's in Paint.NET:
    Ctrl-Z = One step back
    Ctrl-D = Deselect
    Ctrl-I = Invert selection
    (Ctrl-X / C / V / N / S = Cut, Copy, Paste, New, Save)

I have also a question, if I may. It happens I see a picture as this and when I take selective screenshot with imgur, the area that shows my selection is lighter compared to the picture itself. In the picture above for axample there's more grass as we can see. Making it lighter will show it. So my question is:

How can I make a picture lighter?

Thank you.

You can play with the bright/contrast settings in your designing program or online editor.

Another option is playing with the blend modes. I use Photoshop, but some online editors will allow you to use blend modes. Open photo is editor/program, duplicate layer and use the blend modes to find one that suits it :)

Screen will lighten it, but you can add as many as needed to achieve the desired effect.

Possible in Paint.NET? How? (Don't see 'bright/contrast' settings)

Go to Adjustments and it should be listed there :)

How to manage the multiple layers that an image may contain in Paint.NET?

      Image

Work with multiple images inside the same document, with each image on its own layer so you can blend and combine them!

For this tutorial we need 3 images!

The first one is the phone with transparent background from the first tutorial.

      Here it is:
    Image

    Download the other two images:

Ready? Okay, lets open all three images in Paint.NET!

      Image

Select the image of the phone.

Choose the tool : Image Rectangle Select

With the Rectangle Select tool, make a selection of the phone's screen.

      Image

    Press Ctrl-X to Cut.

      Image
(Not happy? Ctrl-Z and try again! ;) )

In the Layers window, add TWO new layers.

      Image

There is always one active layer, and all drawing affects only that layer.
Each layer may be given a name (and may have a blending mode and opacity set).

    Rename them all:
      - Background to : Phone (or Samsung/Galaxy/SII/ ...)
      - Layer 2 to : Background
      - Layer 3 to : Screen (or Display/Chakotay)

Order the layers like this using the up and down buttons:
      - Phone (top)
      - Background
      - Screen (bottom)

      Image

From here we'll be jumping from layers to images and back a few times .. so to avoid confusion:

Layers are red, Images are blue, .... ...

Now go to the image we want to use as background.

      Image

Press Ctrl-A to Select All, followed by Ctrl-C to Copy.

Go to image of the phone, and layer : Background.

Paste the selection by pressing Ctrl-V (Paste!). Keep canvas size!

      Image

Go to layer : Phone and choose the tool : Image Magic Wand

Click once inside the phone's screen

      Image
(Only the screen will be selected)

Keep the selection and go to layer : Background

Press Ctrl-X to Cut the selection out of the background.

      Image

The final image, the one we want to use for the screen, go there!

      Image

Press Ctrl-A to Select All, followed by Ctrl-C to Copy.

Back to the image of the phone, layer : Screen!

Paste your selection by pressing Ctrl-V and drag the selection to the place you want it to be in.

      Image

If you want to make changes in the future it is advisable to save your creation as a .PDN document.
When you open that file later you'll be back where you are now!

Finished? Go to File » Save As... And save the file as a .PNG

      - Bit depth = Autodetect and FLATTEN!

      Image

    C'est ça!

I found this pic later without the words, but for future, how can I remove them, with out compromising the image?
