Overview: Clayton Claw Cleaver Clementine of The Three Glands cuts a sad and lonely figure. Recently discharged from hospital with some unspecified illness (likely a nervous breakdown), he is bequeathed Charnel Castle, the ancestral home. His fears that his new abode may lead to isolation soon prove unfounded as he finds himself surrounded by servants, free loaders and neighbours; all of them larger than life caricatures. Anarchy soon reigns over Charnel Castle as the interlopers create a carnival of chaos, debt and destruction; where solace and restitution can only be found in the, quite literally, strong arms of a good woman.

The sense of fun, madness and absurdity is not only contained in the story of this bawdy romp, but is implicit in the narrative form itself: that weaves in and out of first and third person narrative; makes heavy use of alliteration and rhyme and has short, fragmented sentences that begin and end often abruptly and inexplicably; overall creating a style of writing that is truly unique to Donleavy.
