The Freedom of the Poet by John Berryman
Requirements: ePUB, MOBI or AZW3 Reader, 1.8MB
Overview: Eight months before his death, John Berryman signed a contract with Farrar, Straus and Giroux for a collection of essays and stories. It was dated May 13, 1971, but we had discussed the project at least as early as 1968, shortly after publication of His Toy, His Dream, His Rest, the concluding volume of The Dream Songs. First John sent me a tentative list of the items he was thinking of putting in the book. Later he drew up a formal table of contents, grouped in five sections, and on January 7, 1970, drafted a statement about his own practice of criticism that he intended to expand into a preface. In his letter he added, characteristically, “Hurrah for me: my prose collection is going to be a beauty.”
