Overview: A car accident puts River Novak’s mother in a coma, causing her to abandon her big-city life and move back to small-town Oklahoma. River takes on the responsibility of running her mother’s cattle supply store in hopeful expectation that Loretta will recover from the mutilating impact of this head-on collision. To keep the store afloat River must work alongside the store’s manager, Luke, whom she decides is an ignorant simpleton. This fact makes him the wrong person to fall into a relationship with. But the intimacy of their connection opens her mind to his humanity, making her question what she knows about people like him. The longer Loretta’s comatose body lies motionless, displaying no sign of awareness, the more pressing one particular question becomes for River. What is consciousness, exactly?

The weight of this question, along with new traumatic events, force her to rely on something greater than her strong rational mind to survive them. Just when she thinks she can’t survive another crashing wave, she discovers an important secret that her mom had kept from her all of her life. The impact of this discovery causes River’s own consciousness to stumble into otherwise unwilling territory--an altered state of mind. Her mom’s secret points River down a path leading to a whole new world of possibilities. In some ways, River’s story begins where this book ends.
