I'm also going to echo Henry Miller, he's more literary - the better writer, to be honest - but doesn't mess with truth. Wrote in a different time, but about the same kinds of things.

Knut Hamsun. Read Hunger. Then read Mysteries.

Bukowski cites both Hamsun and John Fante as being great writers.
