What I remember of the story is a brilliant boy being extracted from his underclass neighborhood into a highly competitive and status conscious school where he is bullied by students and teachers alike because of his origins, but at the end of the first book ends up recognized for his achievements, and coupled with the heir to the throne.
Wouldn't you know! I was looking for another book for someone else and stumbled upon this one, it sounds REALLY familiar to your description :D

Thank you. In fact it was something else. My bad - I found it, and forgot to mention it here, and it was in my Calibre Archive BUT I had tagged it SF and not MM: it is Leah Petersen's "Fighting Gravity", the first book of the trilogy "The Physics of Falling". I have now tagged it to reread before going on.
And I do like what I've read of Ginn Hale (in Irregulars and Hell Cops 1), and did stock on her work to be read later (so many books, so little time), including "Lord of the White Hell".
