What do you think is the best Offroad GPS Navigation software available for Android and why?
Minimum requisites the software must fulfill:
- available in markets, and 'in Mobilism'
- display of offline raster maps, be it:
** store maps in cache for offline use (like google maps),
** display a raster format, be it JPG, PNG or TIFF,
** or provide / refer to a tool that allows conversion from these raster formats to a format to be used by the program.
- display of offline vector maps, at least OSM ones.
- track recording.
- display of waypoints and routes.
- having support nowadays (or 'in development').
Also recommended:
- display of online maps.
- dashboard display, with odometer, speed, ... data

Google Maps and Google Earth do not fulfill all of these criteria, i just included them 'in case'. You can refer in 'other' any other app not fulfilling these.

It`s not the software, it`s you that needs to adapt.. you don`t plow your 4x4 recklessly through the brush, you plan your line of best approach and carefully advance with the right amount off power.. same with your GPS software. Your gps speed means nothing and neither does your heading. Your going the way the trail leads at the proper speed... And if you are looking at online maps then you really have not done your homework before you left.. which will likely put the local search and rescue to work needlessly.. join the local 4x4 club and learn responsible trail crawling and the legally accessable trails for 4x4s.
Your phone and internet is not the device you should be relying on in the wilderness to lead you to your destination or get you home if you get lost.
Skill, ability and proper preparation is.

Discussion was about software, not about human nature... but your opinions are welcome. :)

GPS navigation can be used in many ways, some of which are:
- planning a route, and following it,
- tracking your path,
- locating your position / geocaching,
- finding your way back home.
Among these only option 1 requires some amount of prep, and perhaps option 3. The other two do not. But in either case, GPS software fulfilling forementioned features would indeed be helpful.
