Game: Candy Crush Saga v1.61.04
Developer: King
Category: Puzzle
Price: N/A
IAP: $0.99 - $74.99

Everybody has heard of Candy Crush Saga. Last week it was revealed that CCS has topped the “most played games” list beating Angry Birds. It’s a match 3 game, similar to Bejewelled with matching three or more similarly colored pieces of candy to make these treats disappear, with the goal of reaching a specific high score to clear the stage, except King throws interesting obstacles into the mix. Some boards, for example, give the task of clearing jelly cubes from the play field through matching, while others challenge you to somehow get special ingredients from the top of the screen to the bottom. Here's the catch: you only have a limited number of moves. Once those run out, it's game over.

Although Candy Crush Saga is free-to-play, you can purchase the Boosters. Not only that, but once you lose a certain number of times, you can buy additional lives, or get some for free by either waiting a certain amount of time, or requesting more from Facebook friends, which is King's way of getting users to promote the game. This being the case, the creators never put any pressure on you to spend money, which is a welcome change in the freemium business. Unfortunately, later stages become extremely difficult without Boosters. Various upgrades can be unlocked in the Yeti Shop. Playing the game this way can be expensive but, unless you have a serious sweet-tooth, you needn't part with any money. If you're giving this game to a child to play, you'd be wise to disable in-app purchases in your device's settings.

Once you get to level 35 Candy Crush begins charging 69p per episode. The only way to get around this is to link the game to your Facebook account and pester your friends.

Pros:
  • Excellent time waster.
  • Good amount of different challenges.
  • Not pushed into buying anything. If you’re determined.
  • Even with the whole Facebook aspect, you’ll definitely find someone who plays CCS.
  • Extra moves from Facebook.

    Cons:
  • Tablet/phone game only offers up to level 35.
  • Can be abnormally expensive if you pay to play.
