They will remain in your outbox until the person you sent them too logs on and reads them. Once they're read by the recipient, then will move to your sent messages.

Heh, I also wondered for quite a while, how phpBB handles the PM system; I just thought I never sent them, or something else. Had I read this about 6 months ago, I would have known much sooner.
