It's the most watched winter Paralympic sport in the world, but the brutal and blood pumping game of sledge hockey is still in its infancy in Australia.

Para ice hockey, or sledge hockey, was introduced at the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Paralympics.

Instead of pulling on skates, competitors used purpose-built sleds and modified hockey sticks to pull themselves across the ice in pursuit of the puck.

More than two decades later, Para Ice Hockey Australia has recruited a star-studded line up of athletes to entice sun-loving Queenslanders to the fledgling code.

"It is pretty much rugby on ice," Invictus Games gold medallist Mark Urquhart said.
