BOBSLEIGH: The Aussie bobsleigh two-man pair of Lucas Mata and David Mari have finished their opening Olympic event in 22nd place, recording a personal best time in their third run at the Alpensia Sliding Centre.

Finishing agonisingly close to the top 20 in the fourth and final run, Mata and Mari came down the track in 49.87 seconds -- their best time on the South Korean track and an achievement pilot Mata said he was proud of.

"I’m happy. When you finish with the board saying 21 its stings a little, but to see all of the support we have here and how many family and friends we’ve got is amazing," Mata said. "It stings a little bit knowing that the first run could have been a little bit cleaner when we had such a good start draw. We could have made a little more of it. But like we’ve said that’s racing. You make a couple of mistakes here and there."This sport is tenths and hundreds of seconds, so to be knocked out by a couple of tenths it's tough but you know what we had fun, we performed some of the goals we wanted to do so we’re happy."

The Aussies were eventually bumped into 22nd place as the American crew piloted by good friend Nick Cunningham finished +.07 faster.

"How close everyone was, you make one mistake and that’s what happens," Mata said.

Just a heads up... The post/pick made by jychung93 was the last valid post for the Down Hill... The event started minutes after that post.
But don't worry... Lindsey Vonn didn't win anyway

Sorry I've been away. Problems to deal with at home.

The first of the Hockey Games has gone to over time. USA and Czech are tied at 2 each. Updates as available.
Sofia Goggia won the down hill (Vonn got the Bronze)
And I will be posting the next contest, as well as a summary of all the Round 2 Bracket picks.

Stay tuned.

Curler Alexander Krushelnitsky's alleged doping has people laughing — here's what you need to know . . .

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-02-21/a ... op/9470276

Thus far at this year's Winter Olympics, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has brought disciplinary proceedings against three athletes suspected of doping.

One of them is Alexander Krushelnitsky, who won bronze in the mixed curling event. He has tested positive for meldonium.

Some have delighted in noting that the strange "broom and stone" sport of curling had been "rocked" by the doping allegation.

It has also raised memories of Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova, who was banned for 15 months after testing positive to meldonium in 2016.

Krushelnitsky is also Russian, though technically competing in Pyeongchang as an Olympic Athlete from Russia (OAR).

This is the term the IOC has given to the 160 or so Russian athletes deemed eligible to compete despite the continuing suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee over doping allegations at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.

The construction of the case against Krushelnitsky seems straightforward; his routine doping sample has come back positive for meldonium.

Although he left the Olympic Village without comment, it seems his defence will be that a fellow competitor — disgruntled at having not been selected to go to the Olympics — spiked or sabotaged his drink with the prohibited substance.

So what is meldonium? Also known as Mildronate, it is used to treat angina and myocardial infarction and is manufactured and marketed by Latvian company Grindeks. It is used in Russia and Lithuania, but not approved by USA's Food and Drug Administration.

Leading sports doctor Dr Peter Brukner gives the rundown on meldonium and what it does to your body.

Meldonium is an anti-ischemic drug that helps improve circulation, particularly in the brain.

It is produced out of Latvia, has been around for some time and is commonly used in northern Europe.

It is also used for heart conditions such as angina (where there is restricted blood flow to the heart), heart attacks, heart failure and sometimes after strokes.

It has also been rumoured to have been used by athletes for some time.

It is widely used for treating different heart and vascular diseases and helps improve circulation, particularly in the brain.

In terms of its performance-enhancing qualities, it appears it could have a positive effect on an athlete's stamina and concentration.

Although the immediate reaction of many was to treat doping in curling as a joke, the pressurised nature of an Olympics and the demands it makes on athletes — both physically and mentally — could, presumably, tempt someone to use meldonium.
