US Men's 'Reject' Curling Team wins Gold!

The US men's curling team, once known as "The Rejects," pulled off one the great upsets of the PyeongChang Olympics by beating favorites Sweden 10-7 to clinch an historic gold medal.

Team USA had only won a bronze in men's curling since the sport was reintroduced to the Games in 1998, and skip John Shuster's side was considered a long-shot to beat the top-ranked Swedish team, having lost to them 10-4 in the group stages.

But the resurgent US quartet had beaten defending champion Canada 5-3 in the semi-final, and in front of a crowd which included Ivanka Trump and Swedish King Carl Gustaf, they outplayed their opponents to secure USA's ninth gold of these Winter Games.

"We've played our best when our backs were up against the wall," said Tyler George, the USA vice skip."We took it to another level this week. Usually we're fighting and scrapping to get into the playoffs but for five days we were the best team in the world and we did it at the right time. "We always knew we had it in us, but to do it when it matters most is what I'm most proud of overall."

It's a nation made up of only 5.2 million people, but as far as the Winter Olympics goes Norway is on top of the world.

Norway has dominated not only PyeongChang 2018, but has also won more medals than any other nation since the first Winter Olympics in 1924 -- with 330 in total according to data compiled by Sports Reference.

But that's not all. With only a few days left of this year's Games, Norway has won a staggering 38 medals -- 13 of those being gold.
That's 10 medals more than Germany and Canada, who are second and third, and 15 more medals than Team USA.

Norway's latest medal, a bronze in team alpine skiing, took it past USA's record of 37 medals set at Vancouver in 2010. It is also one away from equaling Canada's mark of 14 golds, also set at Vancouver.

"I knew that if we won a medal today we would make history for Norway," said Leif Kristian Nestvold-Haugen, part of the Norway skiing team.

"Even underneath the suit I get goosebumps talking about it, that the Alpine team could get that 38th medal."

My strong commiserations are with our Canadians friends. With their NHL players aboard, they'd have been almost impossible to beat.

The Curling results sure surprised me.

But that's the way it goes in all sports . . . and there's always another season coming up.
