Vertigo Crime: Dark Entries by Ian Rankin and Werther Dell'Edera
Requirements: CBR Reader, 55 MB.
Overview: Occult detective John Constantine has seen his share of strange things in his career, but nothing could prepare him for the horrors of…reality television. "Haunted Mansion" is currently the hottest show on tv, but when the macabre house actually starts attacking the contestants, Constantine is hired to be the ultimate mole. Locked inside with a cast of wannabe-celebrities, his every move being monitored by a deadly figure from his past, Constantine must figure out who (or what) is pulling the strings before he gets cancelled—permanently. DARK ENTRIES is a classic locked-room mystery starring HELLBLAZER's John Constantine from Ian Rankin, the #1 international best-selling crime writer best known for his "Inspector Rebus" novels. Rankin has won numerous awards, including the Edgar Award in 2004 and is joined in this graphic novel by Italian artist Werther Dell'Edera, the illustrator of a number of American comics – most notably Vertigo's LOVELESS.

- Now I have sadly admitted to this several times and will once again confess that I am no John Constantine expert which truly is a pity when he is (at least in terms of appearances) Vertigo's biggest character. However, I am (from what I've read) a Constantine fan already, I mean he truly is a brilliant character and this one-shot gives a nice look at him while at the same time, provides for an interesting read. Yes, it is in black and white, but it's black and white for a reason. This comic is part of the "Vertigo Crime" line and therefore the black and white adds to the noir feel.
Now when I started reading the comic (and maybe stop reading now if you're afraid of spoilers) I was initially disappointed because I figured it was exactly what John did. A regular game show that takes place in a haunted house, so it was fun to only figure things out as the characters did, and see that it was so much more then that. The whole element of enemies past, that all the individuals in the house were somehow connected, and that even demons watch television.
Great comic. Definitely recommend, even if you don't read Hellblazer, it has given me high hopes for this Vertigo Crime stuff (though as far as I can tell there will only be five one-shots, which reminds me, I need to read Filthy Rich).

Rankin wins me over with another John Reviewed by Silkcuts on June 3, 2010.
- Ian Rankin, famed for his Inspector John Rebus books. He also happens to be a John Constantine fan. Lucky Vertigo, right?
Legend has it Will Dennis recruited Rankin first for Hellblazer. Then the Vertigo Crime books were being talked about. To mesh the ideas of Rankin and new imprint, Rankin then was give the chance to write a Crime book... with insisting on using John Constantine, it was green lighted from there. Rankin would write the first ever non-Hellblazer, John Constantine Original Graphic Novel (OGN).
This book may not be branded a Hellblazer book, but it is embraced by Hellblazer fans as canon. Heck John Constantine even has the face scar. It maybe the most accessible of all John Constantine books since he it is not a Hellblazer book. I have had a few friends read it who I couldn't get to read Hellblazer enjoying this book.
The best advantage an OGN has over monthly comics is that the pacing is not limited to the standard 22-page count. Rankin has full range of page pacing. For a man who has made a boat load of money writing prose novels, he writes this book like a Veteran. The book is a classic lock house horror story and supernatural murder mystery then it is a classic crime book.
By looking at the book's pages you will notice black and white boarders: the use of light and dark, black and white, evil and good is wonderful controlled by both Werther Dell'Edera's art and Ian Rankin's writing.
I personally own the standard hardcover and love it. The paper is pulp paper, creating more of a crime novel feel. Lee Bermejo's cover is one of my Favorite John Constantine covers he has created. This is a book I proudly have with my other Hard covers.
I gave it a 5/5 because it a well written mystery done Vertigo style. The Price felt a little high of the pulp paper, but reading history of Ian Rankin's first OGN made me forget the price.
On August 18, 2010 the soft cover will be released. You don't save too much on the price. If you can get the hard cover I would spend the little extra personally. But its a book you should check out.
*Cheers*
