Just out of curiosity about how many users here rooted their Android device, I did put up a poll with a simple yes or no option. I'm sure not everyone will fill in this poll but I hope enough of you will do so, to get some idea of how our users use their devices.

Not needed, but more than welcome to also reply why you have rooted (or didn't root) your device.

The main reason I rooted my devices is because I prefer running custom ROMs over stock (Samsung in this case). Always up-to-date and tweaked to get the max out of Android, running CyanogenMod 10 at the moment.

Another reason is that root is needed to get rid of annoying ads quickly.

Thanks in advance,

Ritchie

Rooted my S2 for a few applications I had to have, being visually impaired is a bitch.
Thing is, I also did it to be able to get rid of a weird pop-up thing via various anti-virus apps , though not success yet.

I haven't rooted. Mainly because I haven't found anything that I wanted to do that I couldn't do without rooting. And I like my Razr's stock interface. I'd probably have gone crazy by now if I still had my Thunderbolt but the Razr is fast and nice. I have no doubt that I would love having some of the access and customization that rooting gets me, but until and unless there is something that I absolutely must root to be able to do and it is something that I absolutely must be able to do, I'm leaving my phone on stock. Not worth the risk to me yet.

Going to try it on my spare Toshiba thrive tablet. First I want to read, and thoroughly understand the process.

I want to get rid of all the damn crapware that Toshiba installs on it that can't be removed in any other way.

Have rooted my Xperia S to get rid of ads.
Probably later on I will use custom roms as I did with my previous phone (HTC Desire).
Also, I could get rid of some Sony bloatware...

I rooted my Galaxy Nexus to remove ads and to flash custom roms, as well as modify app permissions for apps that I felt were too intrusive or far reaching into my data.

@maxiii, I think you have it backwards, HC was buggy and app barren which is why people like ICS/JB, since phone apps play nicely and scale properly across varying screen sizes (with a few exceptions) negating the need for a separate tabletized market, and performance is generally better, just ask owners of the original Xoom.

rooted every phone from day 1, well, sometimes day 2 :)

reasons: backup apps + data, full phone backups (nandroid backup), custom roms / kernels and its awesome to know that you own your android phone, not google!

I rooted my device because it is amazing and why wouldn't you? You can unroot and flash back to stock if you need to sell your device or anything like that. I run CM10 and I love it. No bloatware, Jelly Bean 4.1.2. Like maranello said, backing up apps with data is a must have feature (I guess it wouldn't be so necessary though if you weren't flashing roms). I really don't understand why everyone with an Android doesn't root their device.
