Try installing this apk below, relaunch the DirecTV app, then login with an amazon account, hope it works for you.

By the way, that is the Android TV workaround, if you're on a Shield you can supposedly get the TV version of the appstore by visiting the link below, for the life of me I can't get it to work on my Nexus Player, maybe I need a bluetooth mouse or that extra gamepad that I didn't buy.
