The mobile version of the popular online game Bloons Tower Defense 4.

The Bloons Tower Defense series is one of the most popular tower defense games on the internet. After a version for iOS was released sometime back, Bloons Tower Defense 4 for Android is finally here!

Overview

The games costs SGD 4.04 (roughly USD 3.13 at the time of writing) in the Android Market. For that, you get all of the towers from the original online version of the game, minus the two new towers (Dartling Gun and Spike Factory) and 15 tracks, all of which are new and not seen in the online version.

Gameplay

Bloons Tower Defense 4 is, as the name suggests, a tower defense (TD) game by Ninjakiwi. Like all other TD games, the objective is to construct defensive towers, mostly in the form of monkeys in Bloons TD 4, to counter ever-strengthing waves of enemies, which in this case are 'bloons' or balloon-like forms. Players start with one elementary, dart-throwing monkey, and unlock more towers such as ice and bomb towers, boomerang throwers, super monkeys and even a ship and a plane as the game progresses. Each of the towers are also upgradable 4 times. Examples of enemy bloons that a player will encounter include, in ascending order of strength, basic coloured, zebra, rainbow and ceramic bloons, and eventually extremely powerful zepplins. Of the 15 tracks in the game, only the first three will be available at the start; more tracks can be unlocked by achieving gold medals on existing tracks (by winning in hard mode).

Gaming experience

The title screen is colourful yet neat, with four options: Play Game, Options, Help, and About. Gameplay graphics are beautiful, much like the online version, and gameplay is surprisingly smooth even on non-high end devices: on an entry- to mid-level Samsung Galaxy Ace with a 800 MHz Arm 11 processor, the game ran like clockwork and only started lagging at around round 80+, where both towers and bloons are present in huge numbers.

Premium upgrades

In the online version of the game, a major bugbear for players was the premium upgrades which have to be purchased with real money. The same upgrades in the Android version, however, are now unlockable by winning a certain number of gold medals, with the more powerful upgrades (e.g. double cash) naturally requiring more medals.

Conclusion

BTD4 Android is certainly worth the money, for it you get a fantastic mobile TD game that holds its own against the online version with superb graphics, smooth gameplay and many new tracks. However a downside is that it doesn't contain the online version's two newest towers. In addition, the game was released just weeks before Bloons TD 5, successor to TD4, was released online. BTD5 has many new features, including both towers and bloons, and represents a huge jump in gameplay experience compared to BTD4. Players might therefore feel a little disappointed at not having the latest version of the game. However, given that BTD4 for Android took so long to be released, a BTD5 for Android doesn't look like it's going to be coming anytime soon, so players thinking of waiting for BTD5 for Android should still go for the current version.

Summary

Pros: Great graphics, smooth gameplay, all-new tracks, premium upgrades which don't require real money to buy.
Cons: Lagging behind Bloons TD 5.
