Support for everything about jailbreaking.

This is how to get back to 4.0.1 from 4.0.2 without it ever being jailbroken before or backing up any shsh’s.

NOTE: Please try this only as a last resort. It is not guaranteed to work on all 3GS!
NOTE: It is working only with 3GS. This guide is not working with iPhone 4.
NOTE: I have never tried this method but it was confirmed as working by some forum members. Please try this only if you have already upgraded to 4.0.2.

If you want to skip steps 1-7 you can download the modified firmware for iPhone 3GS ONLY from HERE

1. Download 4.0.1 ipsw HERE
2. Extract it with winrar or winzip to a folder on the desktop. You may need to rename the firmware file from .ipsw to .zip to do this.
3. Open the buildmanifest.plist with the notepad. Search and replace all – 8A306 with 8A400. Save. Repeat the same with the file restore.plist
4. Download 4.0.2 ipsw HERE and open this with winrar or winzip. Note: do not exact it. Just open it and leave it open. You must use this exact file and not create a new one. If you have to create a new one for reasons like you are on OSX, then use zip command line not explorer or finder to make the zip. I will assume you are using the original file opened in winrar for the rest of this guide.
5. Take all the files from the 4.0.1 and drag them over to the 4.0.2 zip archive that you have open.
6. Delete all the dmg files that have 002 at the end, leaving only the 001 files left.
7. Save the archive. And rename it back to .ipsw if you changed the name to get winrar/winzip to open it.
8. Add the 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com line to the host file. If you need help with this step, read this.
9. Put the device into dfu, open iTunes and restore the firmware you changed.
10. When the iPhone boots, open safari and go to jailbreakme.com in order to do the jailbreak

I've read that if you tweak the part "8A306 with 8A400" than it can work for other devices as well

I've read that too, but in fact for the time being it's not working for iPhone 4 no matter what you do.
Also, some people say that all you have to do is to take iPhone2,1_4.0.1_8A306_Restore firmware and rename is to iPhone2,1_4.0.2_8A400_Restore and after that restore. Unfortunately i have no possibility to check it.

Can it be done with iPOD touch 3g?
there is no 4.0.1 for ipod touch on this page: viewtopic.php?f=329&t=137915

Perhaps it is best to wait for OS4.1 and hope that the clever people at jailbreakMe or Spirit etc will jailbreak 4.1?

This guide is for 3GS only.

As far as i know there was no 4.0.1 released for iTouch. You can have 4.0 or 4.0.2.
What IOS are you on now ?

Hi ga!nush-Thanks for your reply.
the ipod touch has 4.0.2 now as I was "forced" to restore it using iTunes, and I had no option but to install 4.0.2
(It's a long story but basically the password was changed and the new one could not be remembered despite trying for a long time while connected to iTunes)
Can you help or should I wait for 4.1 as mentioned above?
Thanks,Cheers

Do you have SHSH blobs for any previous version ?
If yes then you can go back to that and if not then try requesting them through cydia using umbrella.
If everything fails try the method presented above and use it for 4.0.0 who knows you might get lucky as of now you don't have a lot to loose if this does not work then till 4.1 comes you are stuck on 4.0.2

Thanks fibula
I do not have SHSH blobs saved (not that I know of).
The ipod touch was previously jailbroken with Spirit.
So I guess I'll just sit tight for now, because:
1.If I do try the method as presented above and it does not work then I'm unsure if I will be able to restore and put 4.0.2 back on so that the ipod at least works.
2. If the method does work then the ipod will have OS 4.0.0 is that correct?
If so can one jailbreak 4.0.0 or does JailbreakMe or Spirit etc only work with 4.0.1?
3. If one does have SHSH blobs saved or can find then using umbrella then what do you have to do to downgrade the OS?

Thanks for your advice
Cheers

If you did had spirit JB before and used cydia there are 90% chances that you can restore directly a 4.0 version !

What you have to do is this:

1. Modify your hosts: viewtopic.php?f=329&t=137915
2. Download the IOS 4.0 corresponding to your device: viewtopic.php?p=509542#p509542
3. When in iTunes SHIFT+Restore to select the IOS that you downloaded and do the restore.
4 After the restore do this: viewtopic.php?f=329&t=132674

The worst thing that can happen is that the update won't work and you will have to restore again to 4.0.2.

PS: If the restore can't be made, try to do it from DFU mode. To enter DFU, while your iTouch is turned off, Hold Home button and connect the USB cable. Keep pressed until you hear the "new device connected" sound from windows. If iTunes start and your device screen is black it means you are in DFU mode.

ga!nusha

Thank you so much for your help, we are most grateful.
The great news is that your advice worked-like a dream.
The iPod now has OS4.0.0, and Cydia is installed!

If you have time, please, to satisfy my curiosity:
1.Why did this work, or in other words if we had not used “Spirit” in the past why would this method not work?
was something saved on my computer in iTunes or with Cydia?
2.Should I use Cydia's “make my life easier, thanks!” now? If one does then what happens if you do an accidental upgrade in the future that removes jailbreak. How do you downgrade again if cydia has your SHSH blobs?
3.Now that I have modified my hosts as you suggested and done the “downgrade” to 4.0.0- should I remove (delete) the 74.207.10.249 gs.apple.com from the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc hosts file? Does it do anything to my PC by leaving it there?
4.Should I bother with downloading the PDF Patch from Cydia to fix the exploit?
5.Do you have any advice for transfering music and apps (games) from iTunes to the iPod.
I have installed “AppSync” from cydia but the apps and music still do not appear on the iPod after syncing (have tried download an app from the apple store and then syncing-still no luck)?

Once again thank you- have a great weekend
Cheers
