These are instructions on how to unlock the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 3G for use with any GSM cellphone carrier using UltraSn0w.

Before you can follow these instructions you must have a jailbroken iPhone and you must be on the 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04, 06.15.00 baseband(modem firmware) for 3G/3GS or 01.59.00 for iPhone 4.

If you are on T-Mobile remember to turn off 3G before starting...

Step 1: Launch cydia
Step 2: Press to select the Manage tab at the bottom of the screen.
Step 3: Press to select the large Sources button
Step 4: If the ultrasn0w repo is not present press the Edit button at the top right of the screen. Otherwise, skip to Step 9
Step 5: Press the Add button at the top left of the screen.
Step 6: Enter http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com/ as the source url and press the Add Source button.
Step 7: Once the source has been added press the large Return to Cydia button.
Step 8: Press the Done button at the top right of the screen.
Step 9: Press to select repo666.ultrasn0w.com from the list of user entered sources.
Step 10: Press to select ultrasn0w from the list of packages
Step 11: Press the Install button at the top right of the screen.
Step 12: Press the Confirm button at the top right of the screen.
Step 13: After installation completes successfully press the large Return to Cydia button.
Step 14: Power off/on the iPhone.

That's it! Now you will be able to use any sim card with your iPhone.

No, it is not permanent.
It lasts until you uninstall the unlock or until you change the IOS.
But if you keep the same baseband you will always be able to unlock.

I was able to jailbreak an iPhone 3G with IOS 4.1 and modem firmware(Baseband?) 5.14.02 using redsnow. But when I tried to unlock it using ultrasnow, the phone just keep searching for the network, even after an active simcard was inserted. It seems that it could not detect the sim card or the network. What is the likely problem and how to solve it. Thanks

Have you tried to restart the iphone ? I have 05.11.07 and i had to restart the iphone after the ultrasnow patch in order to recognize the sim.

In the first post its says that that device that can be unlocked includes those with modem firmware 5.14.02, but I check my device using forecast from ih8snow. It says that my device can not be unlock. Maybe I have to wait, so i think devices with modem firmware 5.14.02 should not be included on the list of unlockable devices at this time, unless I am wrong. Please confirm

You are correct sir. I have rechecked the information. Sorry for the confusion. First post updated.
There is a way to upgrade to 06.15.00 and unlock but i do not recommend it because it involves using an ipad baseband that voids warranty and that disallows you to install an official iOS.

The iPhone 3G that was given to me was beyond the warranty period anyway, so if I can not use the official iOS, is it possible to use the customized iOS, such as the one configured by using snowbreeze and unlock using ultrasnow? Has anyone tried this approach already and succeded in unlocking after jailbreaking?

I was able to unlock my iphone 3G by upgrading my baseband to 6.15 from 5.14 using redsnow. But I did not upgrade my iOS to 4.2, instead stayed at 4.1 because I have read in some forums that the 4.2 can cause problems with the GPS if upgraded to the ipad baseband 6.15. I have not encountered any problems so far with the upgrade, in fact I noticed some improvements in the speed of UI response when compared before the upgrade. Hope this helps for those who are planning to unlock their iphone 3G on 4.1 with modem firmware that is not unlockable at this time.
