A Case for Inspector Canardo by Benoît Sokal
Requirements: CBR Reader, 900 MB.
Overview: Inspector Canardo is a comic book series created by the Belgian artist Benoît Sokal.

"Inspector Canardo is an anthro comic that star the duck Canardo, an antihero trying to just get through life with enough money for booze and smokes, but who keep ending up in adventures he dont want to be involved in.
The world of Canardo are dark and gritty, and the stories are film noir inspired. Dont expect morality preaching, or happy endings.

This one is my favorite of the series, and the first comic that showed me how comics could be sad and bittersweet.

Only 1-5 have been scanlated so far, and since no more came out in danish, i am unable to continue the series, but i am working with a great group of people who are working on the rest, and hopefully the full series will be out someday...at the moment, 7 and 12 is also translated, but not retexted yet."

The eponymous character and the protagonist of the series, Canardo is an anthropomorphic duck who has a career as a private investigator. While he is seldom seen on paid assignments, he tends to end up in dangerous situations everywhere. He is also often used as a pawn in bigger schemes because of his expendability. He suffers from severe personal problems, including vast consumption of beer to forget the unfortunate events he has gone through. While Canardo is quite skilled both in armed and unarmed combat, he is more of an everyman than a traditional hero.

Interestingly, Canardo has died, at least seemingly, several times. Most of these happen in the comics written for À Suivre. In the first incident, Canardo is about to be lynched by an angry crowd when he falls in a pit filled with urine, where he supposedly drowns. In the next comic, he is alive an well. Later, he is shot to death after being tricked by Clara. Canardo jokingly refers to this incident in the next comic, claiming that the "blood" was actually tomato sauce. In the last short comic, Canardo commits suicide, although this presumably happens chronologically after all other adventures. In the album La Fille qui rêvait d'horizon (1999), Canardo's Cadillac collides with Rasputin's motorbike, causing an explosion that is implied to have killed both Canardo and Rasputin.

Inspector Canardo 00 - First Investigations
This album is a compilation of the shorter comics originally published in a comic book magazine, À Suivre. The loose story arc includes Canardo attempting to solve various crimes, him being used as a tool of political scheming, as well as the complex relationship between Canardo and Clara. The story arc ends tragically when Canardo, now married and settled down, kills himself outside the pub by shooting himself in the head.
These comics featured humans, who are considerably larger than the animal characters, and don't seem to notice the anthropomorphic traits of the animals. Humans were seen rarely in the other albums.

    Inspector Canardo 01 A dog's life
Canardo isn't the main protagonist of this album, but rather a background influencer, or Éminence grise. The story features a dog working to stop a mad doctor who performs animal experiments, while investigating the murder of his girlfriend, for which everyone blames him.

Inspector Canardo 02 The mark of Rasputin
Rasputin, an evil mystic whose raiders have plagued Siberian villages for years, sends a messenger to Europe to find his daughter. After the messenger gets injured by Rasputin's enemies, Canardo, inspired by the beauty of Rasputin's daughter, agrees to help escort her to Rasputin. Matters are complicated by Clara, who is Rasputin's mistress, who isn't willing to share Rasputin's love with his daughter, and is willing to do anything to stop the reunion.
Rasputin, one of Canardo's enemies, appears for the first time in this album.

Inspector Canardo 03 A silent death
Canardo, depressed after the trip to Siberia, witnesses a brutal homicide as Bronx, a bear, kills a customer of the pub despite normally being harmless, being too stupid to be angered. The violent outburst is caused by Lili Marleen, a song sung by a pub singer. Canardo sets off to find Bronx and discover the connection between the song and Bronx's behavior.

Inspector Canardo 04 The Return of Rasputin
Rasputin is found alive, although weak and blind. When he is being transported in a wagon by a father and a daughter in East Europe, Rasputin escapes, causing the local population to equip themselves with firearms and begin hunting for this beast.
This album is the last to feature humans. The story is somewhat more mystical than in other albums, for example featuring a pact with the devil.

Inspector Canardo 05 The Kingdom of the White Birds
Canardo is hired to bring the old adventurer Valembois back from Amerzone. But it does not go according to play, and suddently the pair find themselves on the run from the new regime, and Canardo can only follow Valembois as he decide to finish his search for the legendary White Birds.

Inspector Canardo 06 The White Cadillac
Canardo has invested in a used White Cadillac, to impress clients. Sadly, his case is just about finding a farmer's daughter, who has been abducted to No Man's Land. Canardo is joined by the desperate journalist Klapoff, and they soon find out just how dangerous No Man's Land can be.
And Canardo's troubles have still only started, for many of his old friends and enemies reside in the training camps of No Man's Land, including the lovely Carmen that he had to leave behind in Amerzone.

Inspector Canardo 07 The Sinking Island
Even a detective need a break sometimes, so Canardo has taken a small fishing vacation to a small island in the Maldives. But he catch a shark, he catch more than he bargained for, and soon both the body count start to rise, along with the sea level that is threatening to put the entire island under water. But can Canardo find the killer in time?

Inspector Canardo 08 The Canal of Anguish
Canardo is feeling sick, and have to visit a clinic, where he is informed of a new and horrible disease, Blaxtoplasmosis, is affecting ducks all over the country. He is admitted, but right away, a nervous nurse inform him that things are not as they seem at the clinic. The next morning, the nurse is found floating in the canal next to the clinic. But with the imbecile superintendent Hareford leading the investigation, Canardo has to take matters into his own hands if he want to find out the truth.

Inspector Canardo 09 The Gutter with No Moon
Canardo got a job shadowing the Anne-Chantal Kluutch, heiress to the Kluutch beer empire, who has fallen in love with a local lowlife boxer, Jeff Moulinier, much to the displeasure of her parents. And when Anne-Chantal is murdered, in the same fashion as several whores in the area, Moulinier is the obvious suspect, at least when the case is being led by superintendent Hareford. But neither Canardo, nor the owner of the local bordello, his old flame Clara, believes that Moulinier is guilty. But who did kill the girls, and can Canardo stop the killer before another whore is killed, AND prove Mouliniers innocence?

Inspector Canardo 10 The Girl who Dreamed of the Horizon
Canardo is yet again after his old nemesis, Rasputin, who have taken over a biker gang. But Rasputin is not the only danger lurking in the desolate hotel where Canardo's car breaks down. For there is nothing to do in the dusty desert area, and even pretty ladies can get bored, and dream of heading into the horizon.

Inspector Canardo 11 A Filthy Little Pile of Secrets
Canardo take on a seemingly simple case: an old man lies dying, and is unable to tell his daugher where he hid a a small fortune he managed to get hold on during WW2. Luckily, Canardo just got chosen as a test subject for a portable time machine, which should make the case a cinch. But some secrets are best kept hidden, and who knows what a filthy little pile of secrets might be hidden in the past.

    Inspector Canardo 12 Innocent
A nanny from the prestigious Bellegarden Institute, has been charged with murdering the couple she worked for, the Montaldos. The Institute hires Inspector Canardo to prove their former student innocent, and he heads to the US to get to work on the case. But did the girl really kill her employers? Her description of the events clash with the explanation of the only person other person in the house, apart from the Montaldos son, Johnny, who's in a mental hospital after witnessing the murder.
So Canardo will have a hard time proving the pretty young nanny...innocent!
