Dictionary of Celtic Myth and Legend by Miranda Aldhouse-Green
Requirements: .ePUB reader, 8.3MB
Overview: The ancient Celts were the greatest and most powerful of the early European peoples residing north of the Alps. Warlike, exuberant, and superstitious, they saw divinities in every facet of life and nature, venerating deities of the sun, thunder, water, war, healing, hunting, fertility, and death. They practiced human and animal sacrifice, and a powerful priesthood--the Druids--presided over much of their religious life. The Dictionary of Celtic Myth and Legend covers every aspect of Celtic myth, religion, and folklore in Britain and Europe between 500 BC and AD 400. In parallel with the fruits of archaeological research, the testimony of Classical writers and the earliest recorded versions of the pagan oral traditions of Wales and Ireland provide us with a complete overview of Celtic lore. This guide presents that knowledge in over 400 copiously illustrated articles, together with a comprehensive historical introduction.

The Celtic World by Miranda Aldhouse-Green
Requirements: .ePUB reader, 17.2MB
Overview: The Celtic World is a detailed and comprehensive study of the Celts from the first evidence of them in the archaeological and historical record to the early post-Roman period. The strength of this volume lies in its breadth - it looks at archaeology, language, literature, towns, warfare, rural life, art, religion and myth, trade and industry, political organisations, society and technology. The Celtic World draws together material from all over pagan Celtic Europe and includes contributions from British, European and American scholars. Much of the material is new research which is previously unpublished. The book addresses some important issues - Who were the ancient Celts? Can we speak of them as the first Europeans? In what form does the Celtic identity exist today and how does this relate to the ancient Celts? For anyone interested in the Celts, and for students and academics alike, The Celtic World will be a valuable resource and a fascinating read.

Celtic Goddesses: Warriors, Virgins, and Mothers by Miranda Aldhouse-Green
Requirements: .ePUB reader, 3.1MB
Overview: Celtic goddesses presided over war, nature, animals, healing and fertility. Considerable recent interest has been focused on the role of goddesses in ancient societies, though not always with a clear eye on the actual source material. This book, written by one of the leading scholars of Celtic myth and religion, examines the significance of the female in Celtic belief and ritual as expressed in surviving archaeological remains and written sources. Divine and semi-divine females abound in Welsh and Irish myths, often associated with themes of virginity and sexuality, promiscuity and destruction. The concept of partnership is a prominent aspect of Celtic religion and myth, and it is possible to trace evidence of the divine marriage in both European iconography and Irish myth. Interestingly, the female is sometimes the dominant partner. Terrifying battle goddesses were invoked in times of war, often believed to change into raven-form as harbingers of death. A Mother Goddess was venerated, often in triple form, and supplicated for fertility of animals and crops. Goddesses were often linked with animals: birds, dogs, bears, pigs and snakes all had their divine protectresses. The great Celtic horse-goddess Epona even had a Roman festival dedicated to her. The transition from polytheistic paganism to monotheistic Christianity in the Celtic west is examined in a final chapter.

Crime on My Hands: A George Sanders Mystery by George Sanders
Requirements: .ePUB reader, 1 mb
Overview: You're George Sanders, actor, bon vivant. It's the early 40's, long before you'll meet Zsa Zsa, and All About Eve hasn't been written. Still you're a hit in B-movies, but you've played the Saint and the Falcon so often, you're bored.

Now you're offered the part of a lifetime. You've crossed over. You've made it. You're cast in the lead in an A-production. Well, okay, it's a little shaky, but it's the lead nonetheless. And so what if it's a Western? You go on location in the desert, they stage this big gunfight scene, and Bang! There's a dead body of an extra body not called for by the script.

You're in the middle of nowhere and naturally everyone turns to you. After all, it's a routine situation for the Saint of the Falcon. Dead body, disappearing weapon, no clues. Piece of cake. Only trouble is that you're not Simon Templar or Gay Lawrence. Yes, you know it, but you wonder--does the murderer?

Celtic Art: Symbols & Imagery by Miranda Aldhouse-Green
Requirements: .ePUB reader, 3.3MB
Overview: Miranda Aldhouse-Green, one of the most respected young scholars of Celtic tradition, is a superlative researcher and a clear, often eloquent writer. In this gorgeously illustrated volume, she approaches Celtic art in terms of what it expresses about Celtic culture's spiritual beliefs and social organization. After an excellent, concise introduction defining and locating the Celtic societies of 700 B.C. to A.D. 600, Green explores class and gender through an examination of jewelry, especially the goldwork usually found in graves, and reveals a Celtic world in which rich princesses enjoyed wine and song with male counterparts. Green then looks at the role of war among the Celts as it is suggested by ornate shields and carefully worked weapons. Finally, she comes to what many will consider the heart of the book: the expression of Celtic spirituality in art, especially through the attention to nature shown in the intricate, interlaced vegetation and animal shapes common to the Book of Kells and far earlier metalwork.
